WINNIPEG, MANITOBA—Evansville athlete Joseph Maxwell won a gold medal in shot put at the Canada Summer Games earlier this week.

“I’m pretty happy with the result,” stated Mr. Maxwell after the competition held this past Tuesday at the Canada Summer Games, taking place in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He said this was one of the best, “and closest competitions I’ve ever been involved in.”

Mr. Maxwell explained, “it was a pretty exciting competition. I ended up winning on my last throw, 17.32 metres. It was close, I won by 10 centimetres over Eli Pawliw, a member of the Ontario team, and the lead switched back and forth five times between us during the event. This was the closest competition I’ve ever been involved in.”

“I’ve never actually won a meet before on my last throw,” stated Mr. Maxwell. The throw of 17.32 metres he posted also marked his personal best throw. “I wasn’t thinking about setting a personal best mark, I was just thinking about trying my best on the last throw.”

Mr. Maxwell was in the under 23 division (he is 19-years-old) and Mr. Pawliw is 22. “I was one of the younger competitors in the event,” he told the Recorder. Those competing used a standard college and Olympic shot put (in terms of weight) for the event.

“I did well in the discus event,” said Mr. Maxwell, after his first event in the discus throw this past Monday in the under 23 division on Monday. In order to qualify for the finals in this event, “there is a finals qualifying mark of 42.60 metres that needs to be passed, and I qualified on my first throw,” he told the Recorder. He qualified for the finals (to be held this Friday) with his throw of 48.75 metres.
