It is with great sorrow that the family of Jim Currie announces his passing on September 17, 2013 at the age of 68. Beloved husband of Helena. Loving father of Derek (wife Christy) and Krista. Dear brother of Douglas and Anne. Precious son of the late Thomas and Olive. He will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and inlaws. “Jungle” Jim Currie earned his nickname as a solid two-way defenseman who was also not afraid of dropping his gloves. Highlights of his extensive hockey career included stints with the 1962-63 NOHA Jr. A Champion Espanola Eagles, Soo Greyhounds, Columbus Checkers, and the New Haven Blades. Jim played a crucial role in bringing the Espanola Eagles into the Eastern Canada Finals in which the winner would compete in the 1963 Memorial Cup. In later years, he continued his hockey career with the Espanola and Manitoulin Oldtimers. After hockey, most of Jim’s working career was spent at the Espanola Pulp and Paper Mill. In the off-season, Jim enjoyed playing his second sport, golf. He was also an active member of the Espanola Golf and Country Club. Jim was fond of the outdoors, including hunting, snowmobiling, and ice fishing. As a youngster, he took joy in spending summers on the Currie farm in Nottawa. Most of all, Jim loved being with his family and friends. A celebration of Jim’s life was held on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at 2 pm at the Espanola Golf and Country Club. Donations in the memory of Jim can be made to the Espanola Junior Golf Program at the Espanola Golf and Country Club, 309 Golf Club Road, Espanola, Ontario, P5E 1A3.
