Island youth go the distance at Wiky Invitational Cross Country meet

And they’re off! Runners sprint from the starting line during the Wikwemikong Invitational Cross Country meet last week held at Rainbow Ridge Golf Course.

ASSIGINACK—It was a busy day last Friday as runners from across Manitoulin, Birch Island and Espanola gathered for the annual Wikwemikong Invitational Cross Country meet at the Rainbow Ridge Golf Course.

Assiginack Public School (APS), C.C McLean Public School (CCMPS) in Gore Bay, Little Current Public School (LCPC), Shawonasawe School in Birch Island, Lakeview School in M’Chigeeng, A.B. Ellis Public School in Espanola, Central Manitoulin Public School (CMPS) in Mindemoya, Wasse Abin Junior and Wasse Abin Pontiac School in Wikwemikong were all represented at the meet.

In the eight-years-old and under girls division, Ava Assinewai from Assiginack Public School was first, followed by Maren Kausenich (Lakeview) in second and Jazmin Colwell (CCMPS) in third.

Brodie Pennie (APS) placed first in the boys’ eight-years-old and under division. In second was Davin Deschenes (LCPS) and third was Andrew Rose (LCPS).

In the girls’ ages nine to 10 division, Autumn Deschenes (LCPS) came in first, followed by Avery Sutherland (Shawonasawe) in second and Emma Cassidy (APS) in third.

While in the nine to 10 boys’ division Francis Cooper (Wasse Abin Junior) placed first, Jacob Campbell (A.B. Ellis) in second and Liam Bridgeman (CMPS) in third.

In the girls’ 11 to 12 division first place went to Elle Lacasse (A.B. Ellis), followed by Francesca Pheasant (Wasse Abin Pontiac) in second, and Sierra Pangowish (Wasse Abin Pontiac) in third.

Kyle Lepire (A.B. Ellis) placed first in the boys’ 11 and 12 division, while Matthew Quinn (A.B. Ellis) placed second and Ryan Jones (APS), third.

In the girls’ 13 plus, Sydney Koehler came in first, Sarah (APS) second and Gabby Corbiere (LCPS) third.

As for the boys’ 13 plus, Gordon Wemigwans (Wasse Abin Pontiac) placed first, followed by Hunter Cranston (CMPS) second and Caleb Park (A.B. Ellis) third.

The overall team champions with 23 points was Little Current Public School. The runners up were A.B. Ellis Public School with 6.5 points and Central Manitoulin Public School in third with 5.5 points.
