To the Expositor:
I just wanted to write to express how appreciative I am of the groups in Little Current that do so well with their events. They are dedicated, work very hard and are creative.
Haweater Weekend this year was the fullest program I have seen in years. Fourteen Lions do this mammoth job with help from their friends and volunteers. This year was an outstanding success and they are to be commended for a job well done. The theme “Re-Lion Us” was absolutely brilliant in its simplicity and impact.
Country Fest was bigger and better this year and, in spite of the rain, it was a huge success. Congratulations to Craig and KT, their staff and volunteers for bringing this new event to the Island. The new facility is a credit to themselves, Manitoulin Transport and to the community for helping get this project off the drawing boards to reality. This new facility is available for rental for other groups and will make an outstanding venue for groups like the Lions to hold new projects.
The MacMan Challenge has become another signature event that brings credit to our community and again the organizers show creative talents to make it bigger and better each year.
And finally, not to belabour you with too many words, but our Centennial Museum of Sheguiandah continues to blossom and grow. Bill Caesar, a long-time museum volunteer, has hit another home run with the new book on the history of the Swing Bridge. The author and his editors deserve a big round of applause for bringing history to life once again.
There are many more groups I could mention, but the list would be far too long. Suffice to say, combined, all these special events bring necessary economic benefits to our community and Manitoulin Island as a whole. They need to be firmly supported by the public and by our elected officials. The events I mentioned above are world class and show the high degree of talent we have on Manitoulin Island. There are an equal number of First Nations events and stars that show that Manitoulin’s wealth of people and ideas is second to none.
I am writing because sometimes people who live on Manitoulin become too close to events and sometimes lose sight of the fact that the excellence on Manitoulin is outstanding.
As many know I lived and worked on Manitoulin for almost 33 years before getting disabled out to pasture. I am so proud of what you accomplish, especially with organizations that I laboured with for so many years.
