RDSB Champions Meet

The 2016 Rainbow District Champions meet took place last week with athletes from Little Current and Gore Bay at Laurentian doing the Island proud. Here are just our top 10 aggregate finishers against all of the best from the whole RDSB! Whittier Gauthier of LCPS was 3rd place overall for the individual atom girls with an impressive 2nd place in triple jump, 4th place in long jump and 5th place in high jump. Rhyis Arthurs took 2nd in the 80m and 4th in the 60m, 4th overall in Tyke overall standings. Mackenzie Cortes was fifth overall in the Grade 8 division with a 6th in the 200m, a first in the long jump, 4th in the triple. Malia Leighton amassed 17 points to finish in 7th overall thanks to her 2nd in the 100m, 8th in the triple and second in the high jump. Malia was actually competing against her record setting jump back in May in the qualifying meet in which she set the 1:43m standard. Although her record still stands she ended up in 2nd place with a still amazing 1.35 mark.

Mindemoya Classic this weekend!

The 15th annual ‘run, paddle and pedal’ triathlon is ready to go this coming Sunday morning (July 3). Registration is easiest online (www.mindemoyaclassic.com) but organizers can get you set up on race-day starting at 8 am. If your online registration is received by 3 pm on Saturday (July 2) you (and your and your team) will receive the early bird discount.

The event a 5.5k run, 3ish-k paddle and 13k cycle triathlon can be completed as a team of four, part of a pair or all on your own. That being said, there are always “unranked” teams who like to get creative with the established categories. So, if you have a team of three or five (how about the first ever Voyageur entry?) and if it is the difference between you participating or not, you are more than welcome to enter. There are no division bragging rights, but it is all about being active and having fun so, why not? As always organizers can use a couple more volunteers so visit the above website for more information.

Sudbury Canoe Marathon!

Congratulations to Little Current’s Steve Arthurs who was the lone Manitoulin entry into the Sudbury Fitness Challenge’s Canoe Marathon. Steve entered in the 10km race on Ramsey Lake and was second in his division with a one hour, eight minute clocking for the course.

New paddle challenge for Haweater

Staying with Steve, he is also involved with the running of a great new activity for the annual Haweater Weekend that also keeps participants on the dry (and sensible) side of the water, speaking as a near vertical swimmer. Haweater is always set for the Civic Holiday weekend in August and the Paddle Challenge looks to be a great addition. Organizer are not putting exact distances on the Challenge and will make decision depending on the weather of the day. As it stands, teen, youth and masters 55-plus will all be the same distance, likely under 3 km. In the adult 18-plus and Open the course will hopefully be out to Narrow Island and back, somewhere under 6 km. Kayak and canoes are both welcome.

Paddlers are asked to be at the Low Island Beach between 12:30 and 1:30 pm for registration with the Teen race set for 2 pm sharp. To follow are the 6 – 10-year-old Youth race. The Masters, Teen, Adult and finally the Open division. For more information or pre-registration please contact Steve at 705-862-2324.

Ultimate Tuesday!

Another reminder of Ultimate Tuesdays in Little Current. A game that was originally called “the ultimate game experience” back in the late ‘60s became Ultimate Frisbee and finally today, is known simply as Ultimate. It is a game that I.M.H.O. comes by its name honestly. It is often described as a mixture of football, soccer, handball and basketball. The goal is to get a flying disc down the field from player to player (without the disc holder running) and into an end zone. One of the amazing twists of the sport, even at the highest levels, is that there are no referees. Players are expected to adhere to the ‘Spirit of the Game’ and play with the outmost sportsmanship and be able to self-officiate. Could you picture this with Island hockey?!

Ultimate Tuesday started as all organized sports do, on Facebook, thanks to Ben and Sarah Quackenbush. The group can be searched simply as Ultimate Tuesday on FB to check out the details. They are relatively simple. Every Tuesday all interested (you don’t need to be experienced…curious maybe) players will meet on the Low Island field at 7 pm and play till you drop or 9 pm, whatever comes first. You too can be the first one in your family to use the word ‘hucking’ in polite conversation.

A good sport is good for sports.
