Island elementary, Co-Ed Volleyball Championships

The annual co-ed volleyball tournament took place at the Wasse Abin High School in Wikwemikong last week. Once again organizer Deana Debassige put on a great event with everyone having fun and showed excellent sportsmanship.

In the A division, LCPS Coach Tim Lockeyer led his team through the single round-robin schedule tied for first with Lisa Pennie’s CMPS Eagles. However, during their head to head game, Little Current won and was awarded the trophy. Congratulations to the LCPS Coyotes Jack Renwick, Riley Lockeyer, Jake Robinson, Whittier Gauthier, Jenna Taylor, Autumn Deschenes and Naomi Naokwegijig.

On the B court, Central Manitoulin’s Coach Melissa Brandon and her charges were perfect on the day winning all of their games. Hats off to players: Haylee Cress, Tyler Leeson, Madison Skippen, Hunter Smith, Annie Balfe, Leah Carrick, Zack Bond and Joe Graham.

Mustangs raise money for great cause

Last Friday, both the girls’ and boys’ M.S.S. hockey teams played games Friday night and all the gate proceeds went to Cassandra Cristo (MSS student and hockey player fighting cancer). Organizers had a donation box at the door and those who donated had their names in a draw for a Reggie Leach jersey and autographed book. The Manitoulin Panthers also sponsored two 50/50 draws that took place during the games. In total, $6000 was raised, the stands were packed and Cassie was there for both games, sitting on the bench during the girls’ game. She and her family were very appreciative of everyone’s generosity. Thanks to everyone for their support.

MMHA kudos

Well-known and long experienced referee Greg Lockeyer was effusive in his praise for two teams in a recent house league contest. The Sunday before last he refereed a 0-0 contest between the Mindemoya and Manitowaning Pee Wees. He reported that it was an awesomely played game with both goaltenders, Jacob Wilson of Mindemoya and Manitowaning’s Jorja Peltier, stopping every shot they faced. Congrats goalies, coaches, parents and refs!

The Peltier boys (Gerard/Maxine) continue to be extremely active all over the province. Bo, a defenseman with the number two ranked (in Canada) Powasson Voodoos, last Sunday played his first game in the O.H.L., a big step up. Peltier took a regular shift on defence as the North Bay Battalion played the Petes in Peterborough. Word is that he fit in fine.

Meanwhile you will see Bo in the feature film “Indian Horse” as a bashing/crashing D-man. These scenes were filmed in the Sudbury area. To keep the family busy the NOJHL’s French River Rapids recently signed Bo’s goaltender brother Evan (who is also in the movie). This set up an interesting scenario as the two teams were are scheduled to play each other for Evan’s first game. I’m supposing that the parents might just be cheering a little more for Evan than Bo. That’s not because Evan is the favourite son but that Powassan is first in the NOJHL while Evan will be guarding the net for the squad with the absolute last place team in the League.

Dana Lewis continues to post good goaltending numbers for her Sudbury Midget A Lady Wolves. This past weekend in Cambridge was no exception. Dana and her goalie-partner allowed only three goals in five games and still did not win the tournament! They did however pick up the silver medal after an overtime and a shootout loss to the Windsor Wildcats. Both goalies posted shutouts in the round-robin/semi-finals and were rewarded with game MVPs. To get to the Championship game the Lady Wolves downed Brantford Ice Cats 3-1; Saugeen-Maitland 2-1; Cambridge Roadrunners 3-0 and tied the Oshawa Lady Generals 0-0!

Ice fishing derby features big bucks!

The upcoming Wikwemikoong Ice Fishing Derby, held in Manitowaning Bay has become one of the largest in Northern Ontario. It goes February 11th and $18,000 in prizes are up for grabs. This includes a 2017 Polaris Voyageur 550 snowmachine. The entry fee is $100 per hole. There is also a “pimped Hut’ with a value of $4,000.
