Island lads lead new team, in new league
The Muskoka Wild of the new CPJHL (Canadian Premier Junior Hockey League) is beginning to look like a Manitoulin Island Junior squad. Take a look at their roster and you will find five names familiar to local hockey fans: Brandon Pheasant, Jeremy Cooper, Jeremy Couchie, Zach Pregent and Justice Corbiere! These lads all skated for local teams including the Manitoulin Panthers, the MSS Mustangs, the Wiky Hawks or the M’Chigeeng Thunderbirds. The Wild are in first place in their division of the CPJHL with a great The Wild are 12-2-1 record! There is little wonder why they were selected when you consider some of their impressive stats: Brandon, who has 9 goals and 4 assists in only 8 games; Jeremy (Cooper), who has tallied 5 goals and 6 assists in 13 games; Zach who has 2 goals in only a few games; Jeremy (Couchie) who has an assist in 3 games; and Justice, who has just recently joined the Wild but will also, in all likelihood, be joining the points parade too. Keep up the hard work, gentlemen.
Laurentian Voyageur sinks first goal!
Hats off to Providence Bay/Mindemoya’s Kennedy Lanktree who sank her first OUA goal for Laurentian University recently. Kennedy, a former Sudbury Lady Wolves stalwart and national midget champion (along with M’Chigeeng Deidre Debassige), joined Laurentian as just a freshman this fall. She potted her rookie goal in a 5 – 0 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks.
Chandler rink looks to dislodge top seed
Best of luck to the Jordan Chandler rink and teammates Matt Dumontelle, Sandy MacEwan and Lee Toner as they look strong early and hope to represent Northern Ontario at the Tim Horton’s Brier this year. One potential speed-bump is the Olympic gold medalist, Brad Jacob’s rink. Jordan’s side has been playing well and has already advanced to the quarter finals of the Challenge de Curling de Gatineau and look to peak for the Brier qualifying matches! Good luck, team.
Volleyball coach named to NAIG
Deanna Debassige, a phys-ed teacher and fantastic coach and organizer of all sports for Wasse Abin Pontiac, has earned an assistant coach’s position with the North American Indigenous Games, all-Ontario U-19 girls’ Volleyball squad. The Aboriginal Championships take place in Toronto from January 13th till the 15th. Good luck, Deanna!
Local NOJHL snipers
Little Current’s Dylan Callaghan contributed a brace of goals in the Rayside-Balfour Canadians 4-2 victory over the Iroquois Eskimos on the weekend. Meanwhile, Gregory Trudeau-Paquet, returning from an injury, added another goal to his rookie total. Greg now has 18 points in only 19 games!
Meanwhile, the Indigenous Hockey News has a familiar, Manitoulin face on its cover in its latest issue. Wikwemikong’s Bo Peltier adorns the front of the publication in his Powassan Voodoos’ NOJHL uniform. The Voodoos are the farm team of the OHL’s North Bay Battalion, who are currently ranked among the top teams in Canada’s CJHL.
Lady Wolf competes in Barrie tournament
Whitefish River’s Avery Sutherland and her Sudbury Lady Wolves Peewee B squad were in tough at this past weekend’s tournament down in Barrie. Although they failed to make the finals the team and Avery played a spirited game in each outing. The Wolves are looking forward to home-ice advantage of the annual Snowflake Challenge tournament coming up from December 9-11.
Zumba classes dwindling!
Zumba instructor extraordinaire Casey Boisvert is winding down her season of fun, high energy, classes but there are still a few left so try and get out to a location near you. She is at Lakeview School on Mondays from 6:30 – 7:30 pm on November 28 and December 5. There is just one more Tuesday left at CMPS in Mindemoya on November 29 from 7 to 8 pm. Finally, the Park Centre in Kagawong will host Casey tomorrow (November 24) and Tuesday, December 1, also from 7 to 8 pm.
Santa Shuffle Run and Elf Walk
The annual Sudbury 5km Santa Shuffle fun run and 1km Elf Walk will take place on Sunday, December 2 this year. The start and finish line will be at College Boreal on the LaSalle extension for easy access for all Manitoulin runners (and Christmas shoppers).
