Legion Meet highlights!
The Royal Canadian Legion’s District H Track and Field Meet was held on Saturday at Laurentian University. Manitoulin athletes from various communities put on a great show with many registering top-five finishes.
Spring Bay’s Ava Assinewai took third in the 800m with a new personal best, she then posted a tactical, 1,200m race that allowed her to have enough energy to blast by the second place finisher by 24 seconds. Finally she raised the bar on her new P.B. in taking second in the high jump. All of these results are the more amazing because she was competing against girls almost two years her senior.
Brodie Pennie of Manitowaning is also a Grade 4 athlete competing in the Legion’s youngest, 11 and under division. He didn’t let that deter him as he easily won both the 1200 and 800m races. He followed that up with a 5th place in the triple jump.
M’Chigeeng’s Aysia Francis-Debassige was third in the 200m, 1st in the 100m, 1st in the high jump and finally 1st in the long jump! Shaolin Roy silver in 800m, and took 1st 300m. Sierra Pangowish of Wikwemikong was 1st in the 800m and the 1,200m. Mason Leighton of Gore Bay was 2nd in the 200m, 3rd in long jump, 3rd in the triple and 4th in the 100m. Sister Malia was 3rd in the high jump. Victoria Trudeau 2nd – 200m, 2nd – 300m, 5th – long jump. Lucas Wright 4th – triple jump, 4th – shot put, 5th – 100m. Bailey Yaschuk-Middaugh 4th 300m. Sophie Hietkamp 1st – high jump, 4th – long jump. Brooke Gibeault 5th – triple jump. Macy Pearson 5th – triple. Elijah Lock 2nd – 300m, 2nd – 1200m, 5th – high jump. Little Current’s Whittier Dwyer – Gauthier 2nd – triple jump, 2nd – high jump. Annie Balfe 2nd – triple jump.
Island ball players make All-Ontario squad
Coached by Gerard Baibomcowai of Wikwemikong the team called Sons of Pitches, an All-Ontario Aboriginal Team, is gearing up for the upcoming National Championships. Local players include: Jonas Aibens, Tyler King, Mitchal Payette, MacKenzie Makadebin, Landon Peltier and Austin Jack, who joined by five others from across Ontario. Baibomcowai also coached last year’s Ontario squad to the National Championship.
Rainbow Board junior meet
The first of the RDSB Junior meet featured Little Current Public School athletes. Here are some of aggregate, highlights. In the Tyke boys’ division Rhyis Arthurs won the division easily with 20 points. Colin Lindner was 6th with 10. Autumn Deschenes was second in the Atom girls’ with 23 points while schoolmates Whittier Gauthier-Dwyer and Aysia Francis-Debassige tied for fourth place with 18 points each.
Individually, here are their top-five finishes: Rhyis Arthurs 1st – 60m, 1st – 80m. Mackenzie Green 5th – standing long jump. Davin Deschenes 5th – high jump. Colin Lindner 1st – softball throw. Autumn Deschenes 4th – 80m. 1st – 100m, 2nd – 200m. Whittier Gauthier 5th – high jump, 3rd – long jump 3rd – triple. Sam Assinewai 3rd – long jump. Aysia Debassige 1st – shot put 3rd – triple. Billy Biederman 3rd – triple. Jared Cortes 5th – triple.
Bronze medallion
Congratulations to Mindemoya’s Haylee Cress who recently completed her Bronze Medallion swimming/life-saving level. Just in Grade 7 Haylee was by far the youngest student in the intensive course.
Ultimate Tuesdays!
Ultimate Tuesdays are back for the summer down at Low Island on the Little Current waterfront. The fun begins at 7 in the evening. There are no set teams and everyone is welcome. Check out the public Facebook group to get updates about possible cancelations by searching for: Manitoulin Ultimate.
