OFSAA runners!
To even get to the Show and run against the best cross country runners in all of the province is a feather in your cap to begin with, but Whitefish River’s Avery Sutherland finished 11th in her field of the best 269 midget girls in all of Ontario! Wiikwemkoong’s Sierra Pangowish, in the junior girls’ division, an historical accomplishment on its own, put in a gutsy run to finish ahead of 100 other runners!
Panther Points
Our Manitoulin Panther teams have had a steady start to their seasons. The organization is sporting four teams for this 2018 – 2019 year. They have entered squads in the novice, atom, peewee and bantam divisions!
The atoms are currently sitting in solid .500 country. They are in fourth place in their Division 1, Conference 1 with a 2 – 2 and 1 record. The peewees are also even on their record as they have posted a 2-2-0 record to place themselves in fifth in Division II after round robin seeding. Finally, the bantam roster has been seeded as number one after the Bantam II seeding with their impressive 5 – 2 – 0 tally.
The Panthers’ next home games will be on Remembrance Day, November 11. On Monday, West Ferris will play the Bantams at 12:30 pm at the NEMI Centre. The Peewees are up next at 3:30 when they face Copper Cliff. The Bantams suit up again for the second of their double-header at 5 pm. The atoms’ next home-stand is not till the 18th at 2 pm. The Novice speedsters will not play in Little Current until December 9 at 11 am when Copper Cliff comes calling.
A reminder that team pictures are to take place for the Bantams tonight (7:30 pm) and tomorrow the Novice go at 6 pm and the Peewees at 7:30 pm.
Kirkland Lake Gold Miners sniper Greg Trudeau–Paquet continues his team-leading, scoring efforts. Kirkland Lake opened the scoring six minutes into the middle stanza when Greg added some insurance for the Gold Miners 5:57 into the third as he collected his 12th to put the home side up by a pair.
In their last game against Blind River, Gregory was awarded the first star with his one goal, one assist effort. The youngster is not only the top point-getter for his team but he is in fourth place in the whole 12 team league! He is firing just over a point and a quarter per match.
Mark November 23 on your calendars as the next closest Gregory will be to Manitoulin as his Goldminers take on the Espanola Express. The puck drop is to be at 7:30 pm.
Island runners!
Congratulations to Manitoulin’s Nick Head-Petersen who continues to be a super active person despite maintaining such a busy lifestyle. Nick just recently completed the Toronto Waterfront Half Marathon.
Little Current’s Steve Fessenden was up in Temiskaming Shores for the Haunted Hustle Half Marathon. Steve placed a very respectable, tenth overall!
Finally, Birch Island’s Carrieanne Agawa completed the full 42.2 kilometer, 26 miles and 385 yards of the Paul’s Hamilton Marathon Road2Hope on this past Sunday, November 4. Hats off to all three of you!
Mixed Martial Arts on Manitoulin
MMA has started in Wiikwemkoong! This interesting program is to last six weeks with the first one on the books already. There are still five more Saturday sessions. The youngest athletes (6- to 8-year-olds) start at 11 am. The 9- to 12-year-old set begins at 11:45 am. Session three starts at 12:30 pm for ages 12 plus.

Babstock recognized for giving back!
National Women’s Hockey League All-Star and Wiikwemkoong’s own Kelly Babstock of the NWHL’s Buffalo Beauts was recently featured on the league’s website on how she was able to be a role model this summer back in her original community. Kelly, born to Wiikwemkoong, had many youngsters looking up to the professional hockey player in their midst.
As part of Wiky Fun Day she ran a hockey and lacrosse shooting station, giving many of the children their first exposure to both sports. “I couldn’t have been happier to be there,” Babstock said. “It was a great time seeing these kids love the game and I am excited to continue motivating them.”
