Special Olympic Bowlers have a blast!
Coach Janet Anning is super proud of her large and enthusiastic crew of bowlers who were in Elliot Lake over the weekend for a tournament. Congratulations to Herve Leclair, Tyler Madahbee, Clarissa Moggy, Bruce VanHorn, Anna Bateman, David Gagne, Sandra Graham, William Leclair, Linda McCulligh, Elizabeth Cooper, Roslyn Taylor, Normand Daoust, John Hopkin and Aaron Nickol.
The crew has started their curling season and will start snowshoeing as soon as we have some more snow. Have a great winter, everyone.
Local Lady Wolves strike gold!
The Sudbury Lady Wolves U18 ‘A’ team, featuring Mindemoya’s Delaney Bridgeman as captain, took home gold at the Annual SLW Snowflake Tournament 18 ‘A’ division this past weekend. The girls went undefeated, downing the Thunder Bay Queens 2-1 in Friday’s opener, then defeating Temiskaming Shores 7-3 that night. A rematch saw them down Temiskaming 2-0 on Saturday morning to put them through to the final against Thunder Bay that night, who they dispatched 3-0 for the gold. Way to go Boog and team!
Meanwhile, Sunsite Estate’s Brooke Gibeault, who plays for the Sudbury Lady Wolves U18 ‘B’ squad also was a Snowflake Champion! In the team’s round-robin, they saw two ties (0-0 vs Kapuskasing and 2-2 vs Thunder Bay) and a 3-0 shut-out win over North Bay. In their semi-final win they took Kapuskasing 2-1 vs Kapuskasing. The final game was a barn burner, tied at two after regulation time and the ‘4 on 4’ over time period, they prevailed in the shootout for a 3-2 shoot-out win! Way to go, Brooke!
NOJHL’er to be on national team
Congratulations to Aundeck Omni Kaning’s Samuel Assinewai who will skate for Canada East in the World Junior A Challenge, featuring the top Junior A players in Canada to wear the Maple Leaf in Cornwall this week!
Catching up on his brief stint with the NOJHL’s Sudbury Cub, Samuel has an amazing 1.36 points per/game average. In only 11 games, including adjusting to a whole new team, Samuel has five goals and 10 assists. By the way, teammate and fellow Islander Billy Biederman, who is ninth in the whole league, has an equally impressive 1.37 points per game!
Wiikwemkoong’s Marion Jacko joined a list of other esteemed hockey people nominated for Hockey Canada’s oversite committee. The National Post reports Marion as having significant sports administration and, “Jacko, who is an Anishinaabe from Wiikwemkoong First Nation, is the assistant deputy attorney general for the Indigenous Justice Division of the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General. She is also president of the Little Native Hockey League.” Fellow nominees include former Team Canada Captain, two-time gold medalist Cassie Campbell-Pascall and Hugh Fraser, who has been an arbitrator on the Court of Arbitration for Sport since 1995 and served on the first ad hoc court at the 1996 Olympics. Beachside bonspiel?
The Gore Bay Curling Club is getting ready for their ladies’ bonspiel to take place on January 13-15. With the theme of ‘Life’s a Beach,’ I am sure they will have you forgetting the frigid temperatures outside. They invite you to, “come and curl, come and watch, socialize and enjoy!”

Candice Irwin has opened registrations for her winter sessions. After their fantastic fall sessions with a record number of students, Candice is excited to keep moving with you in the New Year! The Winter session starts the week of January 16 and runs until March 9. They’ve got some exciting things planned for this winter including a fee discount for families that register and pay by December 18 and a new class for ages 3-4 in Mindemoya. Get your registration in early to make sure you get into the dance classes you want!
