Avery Sutherland wins SDSSA and NOSSA
Congratulations to Whitefish River First Nation’s Avery Sutherland who has maintained her dominance of the cross country race courses even as she competes in the Sudbury region for Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School. The youngster started out with a dominant win in the city, SDSSA championships, when the four kilometre course was crowded with both male and female racers. As Sudbury.com reported, “Sutherland would have earned a bronze medal, even if the race been considered an open mixed event” after finishing third overall in both classes, yet eclipsing her “girl” competitors to finish first and qualify for the Northern Ontario Championships at NOSSA.
Up against all of the best from the Sault, Timmins, Sudbury, North Bay, Espanola, Manitoulin and all points in between, Avery then won her race to punch her ticket on to the all-Ontario championship OFSAA event coming up this week in Hamilton!
Young Wiikwemikoong runner sets record!
Congratulations to Sierra Pangowish who has the distinguishing honour of being the first Wiikwemkoong athlete who has made it to the all–Ontario Secondary School championships, also known as OFSAA! History was made at the Northern Ontario Championship NOSSA event where she finished eighth and will now represent, alongside Birch Island’s Avery Sutherland later this week.
Mustangs stomp at the Gator Tournament
The Manitoulin Secondary School’s junior girls’ basketball team is looking super strong for such a young squad. Many of the players competed in top level competitions last year and were well prepared for what high school ball had to throw their way. Playing in the exalted Gators’ Tournament hosted by L’Horizon Secondary in Val Caron, the Mustangs were right in the mix of things in the eight-team format. The local side was not to be taken lightly as they threw down their A-Game against the perennial power-house five from St. Charles and put in a convincing 26-15 win over the Cardinals!
They lost their second match to Franco Cite but then brought their record up with a win over Elliot Lake: 2 – 1. As it would have it with such a strong field at this year’s Gators’, Manitoulin narrowly lost the occasion to advance to the play-off round.
With all of the grit shown over the weekend the team is poised to great things in the remainder of their season. Congratulation to such an amazing start team and players: Tierra Abotossaway, Whittier Gauthier, Darci Debassige, Chloe Peltier, Savannah Eshquib, Skye Setterington, Lindsay Sheppard, Autumn Deschenes and of course Coach, Sherry Thirkill.

Nickel City Sons
Mindemoya’s Liam Bridgeman and Wiikwemikoong’s Carson Shawana and their Nickel City Sons Major Bantam AAA team put in a solid effort in a 5-2 win on Sunday to earn the split and avenge a 5-1 loss on Saturday of a weekend pair with North Bay. The team got off to an early start in the win, scoring in the first couple of minutes and went on to dominate the team that has been dominating them thus far this season. Now sitting at an improved, 2-12-5, time will only tell if they have truly turned the corner with their new system, or if it was just an ‘on any given Sunday’ situation. Keep up the hard work, Carson and Liam!
Sudbury Lady Wolves
Delaney Bridgeman and her Sudbury Lady Wolves Bantam AA squad earned a true split this weekend in three league games in Toronto. The SLW side dropped their Saturday opener to Brampton 4-2, came back to beat Vaughn 2-1, with Delaney notching the game winner, then fought to a well-deserved 2-2 tie with Scarborough. Undeniably, respectable results that will hopefully fuel their continued ascension up the ladder of provincial rankings, where they now sit at 16th.
Assiginack’s Island Flag Football Tournament
Little Current Public School won the annual event after prevailing over the host, Assiginack Public School All-Stars. Helmets off to Coaches Tim Lockeyer and Cole Dummond who led their charges to their gridiron victory over the home-school, All-star squad: Brayden Waindubence, T.J. Green, Alan Wilkin, Keaton Gauthier, Andrew Rose, McKenna Barnes, Noelle Naokwegijig, Landen Harasym, Cat Rose, Mackenzie Green, Avery Recollet, Billy Biedermann, Davin Deschenes, Morgan Green and Jayden Hembruff-Rohn.
