Island Cross Country
The annual Island cross country championships was thankfully filled with all six Island schools once again and thus a true Manitoulin competition. The event was held at CC McLean for the second consecutive year in recent memory and was a great success thanks to teachers Bruce Lindsay, April Patterson, Robyn Best and not to forget numerous parent and student volunteers.
In the age group races here are the top three medal winners. Ripping into first for the 8 and under girls’ race was Zaagaasge Toulouse (Lakeview), Autumn Davy (CMPS) and Maya Balfe (CMPS). In the boys’ race, Mathis Bredin and Rylan Pennie (APS) were 1-2 and Jack Bridgeman (CMPS) took bronze.
In the 9-10 year old class Delaney Bridgeman and Ava Assinewai (CMPS) took the top two positions as Jazmin Colwell (CCM) finished third in the girls’ event. Brodie Pennie (APS) led the boys’ dash followed by Davin Deschenes (LCPS) and Jesse Burella (CCM).
The 11 – 12 girls’ race, Wasse Abin posted an impressive sweep, blasting through the finishing chute with the first four runners. The quartet, who also run weekly for the Newmarket Huskies, running club all around the province, demonstrated what dedication to the sport and training can do! Congratulations to Autumn Peltier, Sierra Pangowish, Victoria Trudeau and Franchesca Pheasant for a perfect-10 score. The guys’ race was won by Lakeview’s Nyron Panamick, then CCM’s Trent Bell and in third, CMPS Eagle Liam Bridgeman.
Marjorie Scott (CMPS) finished her elementary cross country in a dominant fashion with some focused personal motivation. Taking silver was a Wasse Abin, 2-3 finish by Destiny Trudeau and Novaleigh Pangowish. The boys 3.5 traverse was won by Kesai Mandamin, Ian Dokum, 2nd, and LCPS’s Ben Marshall, 3rd.
Overall, the aggregate team total went to a well deserving Wasse Abin squad who won for the first time in a dozen or more years. Great job, team on all the hard work you have obviously done. Taking the team silver was CC McLean while CMPS picked up the bronze medal.
Curlers at Team Jacobs
Providence Bay Bantam curlers participated in the Team Jacobs Youth Challenge in Sault Ste. Marie on October 24 and 25. The team consisted of skip Alex Dawson, vice Isaac Gosse, second Caleb Byers, and lead Brady Case. This was the first Bantam level experience for these players. The event was a team building experience, and the Dawson rink held their own with 22 other Bantam level teams from across Northern Ontario. The curlers received advice and guidance from the men’s Olympic gold medal winning Team Jacobs.
Pinnacle of Pickleball
Congratulations to the Little Current, Pickleball Club and their continued success at the provincial level. At the recent Hamilton District 2015 Pickleball Championships, on October 16 and 17th there were a few local athletes who brought home the hardware. From the full-time, Little Current Pickleball Club members Mike Myc, silver, men’s doubles, skill level 3.5. and Pierrette Hebner, won bronze, in the women’s doubles, skill level 4.0. Congrats as well to Meagan Boisvert, of the Owen Sound Pickleball Club, who joins the local group in summer-time play as she sails the North Channel, won Gold in mixed doubles, skill level 4.0.
Although the event in Hamilton was the last tournament for the 2015 season some members will extend their competitions to the sunny state of Florida. The Hebners for instance are already signed up for a tournament for December in Englewood, Florida.
The local club looks forward to increasing their membership once again next year. With 44 members, including 18 seasonal players. The membership would like to reiterate that this is not a “seniors only” sport and is the fastest growing sport in North America, period! They offer coaching and even equipment. Belated 3-Pitch Kudos
I was finally able to track down the two winning senior, three pitch teams who won the “A” and “B” divisions held at Central Manitoulin last month. In the “A” event Little Current was the team to beat as Coach, Tim Lockeyer brought a well-rounded, defensive and offensive squad to the town fields to win the title. His team featured: Ben Marshall, Boston Thibault, Carter Abotossaway, Lukas Abotossaway, Jake Robinson, Carl Dickson, Jasmine Clark, Kyleigh Biedermann, Willow Corbiere, Mackenzie Cortes, Reace Wallace, Tierra Abotossaway and Shayla Twain.
At the CMPS, “B” event Wasse Abin turned a third place round-robin finish into a dominant win over the home-squad Eagles team. Congratulations to team members: Trinity Henry, Anina Pangowish, Jaycelynn Assinewai-Trudeau, Danika Peltier, Julianna Peltier, Lyndon Neshkiwe, Kevin Trudeau, Dante Recollet, Hunter Staruck, Eli Jackson and Coach Bruno Henry.
