Maxwell at Worlds!

Congratulations to Evansville’s Joseph Maxwell who recently competed in shot put at the 2015 IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) World Youth Championships in Cali (Pascual Guerrero), Colombia. Just one of only 21 of all male athletes selected in all of Canada, Joseph easily qualified with his then personal best toss of 20.01 metres, needing only 18m to make the cut. In the qualifying round in Cali, Maxwell was up against 31 other athletes from all over the globe. Needing to be in the top 12 or a put of 19.45m, Joseph easily moved into the finals with a 19.67 measurement.

When athletes at the world’s best level get to this point they have trained so carefully to peak for their main event, have a strict performance oriented diet and have prepared mentally with visualization exercises that for them to achieve a personal best it is something to celebrate. Joseph, who is self-trained, smashed his old mark with a 20.29 throw to eclipse his old mark set back in February by 28 cm! The mark put him at 6th best in the whole world! Way to go Joseph, on the P.B. and the obviously, astute preparations.

Pickleball hardware

Some of the local Little Current Pickleball Club members took part in the Pickle Ball Eastern National Championships and based on the results, the local chapter is doing something right in order to bring back such amazing results.

Congratulations to: Mike Mic, bronze, mixed doubles, age 65 to 69; Bud and Pierrette Hebner, silver, mixed doubles, age 60 to 64. (The Gold was only 2 points away…argh, so close!); Marg VanCamp, bronze, women’s doubles; Bud Hebner, bronze, men’s doubles; and Pierrette Hebner, silver, women’s doubles.

The club is also open to those with more of a fitness aspect instead of competition with a lot of supportive members willing to spread the Pickleball message. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the curling rink at the NEMI Recreation Centre the local club will provide instruction and equipment for anyone who wants to go out and try. For more information you can contact Bud and Pierrette Hebner, by email at: bphebner@gmail.com or by phone at: 705-368-1953.
