Junior Eagles medal at RDSB
Coach Gerry Holliday has been working hard with a very young CMPS Eagles’ junior girls’ basketball team to get them ready for the tough Rainbow District School Board Junior Tournament. The players and his hard work paid off last week as the fledglings took third place in the competitive event. The squad lost their first game to Northeastern but evened their record with a win over Cyril Varney Public. The win put them in 2nd place in their pool so they played against R.L. Beattie the top team from the other pool. The Eagles lost a close one, 19 – 16 and were relegated to the bronze medal game where they beat Princess Anne Public to win the bronze medal game.
Congratulations to Marjorie Scott, Madison Skippen, Julia Desbiens-St. Amand, Avery Sheppard, Leah Carrick-Spry, Morgan Wall, Amber Wahl, Hailey McGillis-Prior and Aislinn Brown.
3 on 3 marathon
My Dad was a ‘foreign’ correspondent this weekend as he and Mom headed out to Sault Ste. Marie and attended as many games played by Manitoulin teams as was physically possible. With the Open Ice 3 on 3 Tournament using four different rinks all over the city, it was amazing just how many of them they got to see. Here is his account.
Well it was a real Manitoulin homecoming this weekend in Sault Saint Marie this weekend as a dozen Island teams competed in the huge, three on three hockey tournament. The majority of the teams did very well and everyone, players and parents seemed to have a great, season-ending time. With well over a hundred Islanders in the Soo, one could hardly go anywhere without seeing someone you knew.
Manitoulin’s Average Joes, which was essentially the bantam Panthers, skated and passed their way to six straight victories to claim the Bantam Thunderbird division championships. The team, coached by Panther coach Steve Doane featured the following players: Braeden Case, Cole King, Greg Doan, Mike Megwanabe, Nate Debassige, Mason Pine, Noah Moreau, Tait Wallace and T. McGregor. Congratulations gentlemen and to their supportive parents.
I especially enjoyed meeting former Panther players such as Matt Case, Jeff Green and Jason Pitawanakwat who were there to see their sons compete, or as in Jeff’s case, compete in the adult division! The “young” men still have the moves. These guys have great supportive wives and families who have been in arenas almost from birth. Good news for Matt and Leanne Case as both their boys, Noah and Owen, have made the Sault Greyhounds AAA teams in their age divisions.
Also doing well were M’Chigeeng boys Jeremy Couchie and Cole Pitawanakwat who won the Greyhound division in the Midget age group with a Soo squad. The boys were watched by their parents grandparents and great grandmother 93-year-old Mrs. Norman Debassige! What a wonderful hockey family.
In the 2004 Greyhound division the Manitoulin Danglerz won two of three to make it to the semi-finals. The Manitoulin Minor Moose won two and tied two and made the semi-finals in the 2002 (Peewee) Thunderbird division. The Manitoulin Major Wildcats won 1, lost two and tied one in the 2001 Peewee Thunderbird category. Coach Brent Leeson took his Mindemoya Thunder Peewees to a 2-1 and 1 record. The Manitoulin Outlaws coached by Ray Moreau won three and lost one but were eliminated because of their GF/GA percentage. The Manitoulin Haweaters coached by Rob Dearing won 1 and lost 3. The Manitoulin Renegades, coached by Jeff Francis and Dave Webkamigad ended up losing all four games. They actually outscored an opponent although it was over-ruled under a protest. Congratulations as well to other Manitoulin coaches Jonas Bondy and Craig Abotossaway.
Night running
Congratulations to recent CMPS French teacher Michel Spadafore-Lemire on his impressive run in the first even Northern Water Sports’ 5K Night Run. Way to go Mich!
Tracking runners
Good luck and congratulations to James and William Scott and Carissa Holliday who have been training hard this winter for track season. The trio will be running at the annual Black Flies Track and Field Meet this weekend at the Laurentian track.
A good sport is good for sports.
