High School Track and field

Despite the ongoing high school teacher strike a North Shore Secondary Schools Association (NSSSA) track and field championships took place last week hosted by Elliott Lake Secondary School. Several Manitoulin athletes competed with three from Manitoulin Secondary as well as a small team from Wasse Abin High School in Wikwemikong.

The three MSS runners will all be moving on to the Northern Ontario NOSSA qualifier for the all-Ontario OFSSA championships next month. James Scott finished with three silver medals (800m, 1500m and 3000m). Incidentally, James lost each of his races to an Elliott Lake runner, Nicholas Lambert, who set three new NSSSA records in the process. William Scott is off to NOSSA thanks to his 2nd place 200m race having just been edged out of gold by 3 one-hundredths of a second. Also moving on is Carissa Holliday who took third in the 3000m.

Wasse Abin athletes also had some great results as well. Aurora Ominika-Enosse was 4th in the 1500m, Harmony Rivers took 4th in long jump and was first in high jump with teammate Dehmin Eshkawkogan-Recollet, second; Delani Trudeau, first, shot put, and fifth, long jump; and Matthew Oshkabewisens, fourth, triple jump.

Over in the Sudbury NOSSA qualifier, the SDSSA, Manitoulin’s Jacob Pitawanakwat, who competes for St. Charles, took first in the long jump with a massive 5.70m leap and was also part of the winning 4 X 100m relay squad.

Manitowaning badminton

A cooperative effort between Noojmowin Teg and Assiginack has brought badminton to the Manitowaning Arena. The program is five weeks long, and is open to 6 to 14-year-olds. Due to such a great turnout, they even modified the evening to include 6 to 10-year-olds for the first hour, 11 to 14-year-olds for the 2nd hour. The program is every Tuesday (with the exception of June 2) from 6 to 8 pm at the Assiginack Arena. The agenda for each session includes a brief warm-up and stretching, followed by skill development drills. Participants then have “free time” for the last half hour to rally with friends and have some friendly competition.
