Sudbury Rocks Marathon
The annual Sudbury Rocks Marathon race weekend took place this past Sunday. In the 42 km marathon Steve Fessenden finished in 10th place overall with a 3:34 pacing! In the 21km, half-marathon, congratulations to Little Current’s Laurel Leconte, Tammy Rolston, Leslie Marshall, Samantha Case, Mindemoya’s Kristy Keller and Wikwemikong’s Randy and Paula Recollet!
Running in the 10K was Little Current’s Diane Meehan who had a great time. Gore Bay’s Greg Bond has never specialized in the shorter distances but is enjoying the new challenges of the 5000m and is training to get his 5K times down. With his clocking at 21:30 and his first-place finish in his age group out of 37 runners, it seems as though he has found the key to speed. Great job, all!
Elementary soccer championships
The annual Manitoulin elementary school soccer championships took place last Tuesday in Mindemoya for the intermediates and in Wikwemikong for the junior teams. Assiginack took the Intermediate “A” division with a close match with host CMPS squad. Congratulations to coach Jeremy Mailloux and his charges: Elena Hovingh, Sarah Hovingh, Joe Cassidy, Ovid Therrien, Jason Quackenbush, Maylen Moffatt, Sophie Bondi and Ethan Closs.
CMPS did win the “B” division thanks to the tireless “no-subs” efforts of: Alex Dawson, Jason Millette, C.J. Wilson, Holly Sagle, Caleb Byers, Janessa Lee, Amber Wahl and Jary White.
Hats off to CC McLean who won the junior “A” division! (Unfortunately, I did not receive their roster). In the “B” division CMPS took the title. Congratulations to Nicole Cress, Madison Skippen, Ethan Cooper, Garret Sheppard, Zach Gibbons, Liam Bridgeman, Ben Dewar, Jaemie Moor, Carter Moggy, Delaney Bridgeman, Leah Spry and coach Michael Bridgeman.
Black Flies!
Congratulations to high school students Carissa Holliday, William and James Scott who all competed in the annual Black Flies Track and Field Meet two weekends ago. Carissa finished 4th in the 800m and 5th in the 1500m. James was 3rd in the 800m and 6th in the 1500m. William was 9th in the 100m, 6th in the 200m. Keep up the training guys!
Mindemoya Classic to celebrate 14th anniversary
The “challenge for everyone” triathlon is to hit its 14th birthday on Sunday, June 28th, just over 6 weeks away. The run, paddle and pedal triathlon is a lot of fun with something from the ultra-competitive to the anti-competitive and all for a “can’t be beat” price. The race that started out as a co-ed team-of-four event only has grown to include an open pairs division as well as a solo, race category. As part of a team you can choose to enter the relay version where a team of four will have one runner (5.5km), two paddling a canoe (about 5km) and finally, your fourth person will bike (13km). A relay-pairs team will have one who runs, both paddling and one who bikes. The other way to complete the challenge is to try your hand and feet at the endurance race where all members of your team (4’s, pairs or solo) complete each of the 3 legs with a team of four using 2 canoes.

Outdoors Club, wet
The annual Central Manitoulin Public School Outdoors Club completed their annual three day hike this past weekend. The two-night, three day tour through the LaCloche hills is always an epic adventure with all of the horizontal and vertical distance covered not to mention it is often for most, the first experience of a self-supported, hiking experience. The weather added an extra special mental and physical challenge for the 13-and 14-year-old campers. They knew there was a lot of rain when, at one point, spirits brightened because the rain stopped. However, it was all relative as the rain never did stop all day Saturday and would go from torrential to just drizzling.
Congratulations to Farrell Everett, Janessa Lee, Brodie McAllister, Jary White, Matthew Redmond, Abby Dewar, Sean Orford, Maddy Niven, Hunter Cranston, C.J. Wilson, Chris Haner and Ethan Smith.
