Hunters encouraged to participate in deer check station

0

ESPANOLA–The Ministry of Natural Resources Sudbury District, in partnership with College Boreal, will be running a voluntary deer check station in Espanola this year to sample deer taken during the Manitoulin deer hunt from November 19 to 25.

The objective of the deer check station is to collect up-to-date biological data on harvested deer (age, weights, antler diameter, etc.). This data collection effort normally occurs every second year. The data is then used in conjunction with mail survey data in the management of the Manitoulin deer herd. The sustainable management of this resource is very important.

The check station will run from November 21 to November 24 in the Espanola Mall parking lot.

The Manitoulin deer hunt is a significant economic driver supporting approximately 8,500 hunters annually from all over the province. A recent study pegged direct and indirect expenditures by hunters in excess of $10 million annually.
