LAKE WOLSEY–The human remains discovered on Thursday, September 20 by a hunter near Lake Wolsey in Gordon Township have been identified as those of Alfons Jauernig, the 78-year-old man who went missing from his Stone’s Lake home in May of 2010.
Mr. Jauernig was reported missing by his wife on May 27, 2010 shortly after 9 pm after he wandered from his home near Coburn and Poplar Roads just south of Gore Bay. He was last seen on a trail adjacent to the Jauernig summer home.
An extensive search was initiated at that time with Manitoulin OPP officers, RCC Trenton and the North Shore Search and Rescue. During that time OPP specialty units such as the helicopter, canine team, marine operators and the underwater search and recovery unit also assisted in this search.
After an extensive search lasting many weeks the OPP suspended the search until further information or leads come forth as to the possible whereabouts of Mr. Jauernig. Police asked for the assistance of the public at that time to be mindful and keep observation for this gentleman, including asking for the assistance of area hunters during the annual deer hunt. Over the past two years OPP have conducted periodic searches for Mr. Jauernig with negative results.
The investigation is now complete by Manitoulin OPP officers and detectives from the OPP Northeast Regional Crime Unit. This now provides closure for the family of Mr. Jauernig.
