MANITOULIN—The Manitoulin Health Centre (MHC) is pleased to officially announce new hospice suites at both the Little Current and Mindemoya Hospital sites.

MHC, in partnership with the North East Local Health Integration Network (NE-LHIN), the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and local health care provider stakeholders, have launched this new capacity, a release notes.

The suites were supported through dedicated funding provided by the NE-LHIN, and the Mindemoya site also was augmented through a local donation that came from the hospital’s auxiliary.

Each suite is outfitted with a patient area, a family space with kitchenette, a separate washroom and shower facility, and is decorated in a very home-like environment.

There are in-room features like air flow extraction so that smudging can be performed in the suites, as well as controlled dimmable lighting.

“Care at end-of-life for residents of Manitoulin will be enhanced through this new capacity for care,” the MHC release says. “It is important to note that MHC has always provided palliative care and will continue to do so in other hospital ward settings.”

Now, in addition to this palliation, patients who are assessed through standard criteria as needing and qualifying for hospice care will have access to the new suites.

“MHC wishes to thank everyone who played a part in making this happen,” the press release notes. “May these suites bring comfort and peace to all who are in need of this care.
