Design a logo, win a prize, boost awareness

MANITOULIN—The Expositor Office has a new challenge for Manitoulin people: a contest for a logo that will represent Manitoulin Island in Canada’s 150th year. For those who can remember, Canada’s Centennial Year, 1967, started with a big splash and this energy was sustained for the entire 12 months of that pivotal year.

January 1, 2017 will mark the beginning of Canada 150, our nation’s 150th anniversary of Confederation and towns, cities, groups and individuals across Canada are planning how they will celebrate 150 years of Canada similar to the 1967 centennial celebrations.

With this in mind, together with the fact that there will be myriad special Canada 150 events taking place the length and breadth of Manitoulin next year (mirroring all of Canada), The Expositor Office is challenging the Island community to come up with a logo that can be used as a common brand next year in advertising 150th anniversary events through print, posters, billboards and so on.

The designs should be simple and incorporate the words “Canada 150,” “Manitoulin” (or “Manitoulin Island”) and also include a simple graphic device that ties together “Canada 150” and “Manitoulin/Manitoulin Island.”

The designs should be simple and scalable. That is to say, they must be easily recognized whether they are, for example, as small as 4 inches wide or 18 inches wide, depending on the use.

Next year promises to be a year not only of special events but one in which we can take stock of our great good fortune to be citizens of the true north, strong and free whether we are descended from generations of citizens that have inhabited this land for millennia, in the case of First Nations people, or one or two or three hundred years, in the case of Canadians of European ancestry, or for a year or two or three or four decades in the case of people who have chosen to immigrate to Canada from countries in all corners of the planet.

This will be, then, a time of both celebration and reflection of where we’ve come from, how we are now and the place of Canada in the world in the future.

Yes, there will be prizes: $300 for first prize, $150 for second prize and $50 for third prize and all entrants will receive a special-edition T-shirt sporting the winning design that they can wear next year to demonstrate their national and Island pride.

Deadline for entries is midnight, December 31, 2016 and the winning entry will be announced in the New Year.

You can submit your entries by email to expositor@manitoulin.ca; by Canada Post addressed to the Expositor Office, Box 369, Little Current, Ont. P0P 1K0; or by bringing your design into the office in downtown Little Current.
