Hearing in murder of M’Chigeeng man adjourned to Oct. 20

GORE BAY—On Monday, September 29, the case against Mr. Kimel Corbiere, 26 years old of Mindemoya, was adjourned to Monday, October 20 in the Gore Bay court. Mr. Corbiere, who appeared in court on September 29, remains in custody, charged with murder in the death last June of Johnny Panamick of M’Chigeeng, age 70.

On Sunday evening, May 11, 2014, Mr. Panamick was found in his home on Back Street by a neighbour, having suffered extensive injuries. Mr. Panamick was transported to hospital then transferred to Health Sciences North in Sudbury, where he died on June 13.

On July 17, the United Chiefs and Council of Manitoulin (UCCM) Anishnaabe Police and the OPP North East Region Crime Unit, under the direction of Detective Inspector Tracy Dobbin of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), arrested Mr. Corbiere and charged him with the first degree murder of Mr. Panamick.

Mr. Corbiere made his first appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on Friday, July 18.
