MANITOULIN–The Sudbury and District Health Unit has lifted the heat alert that it issued for the Sudbury and Manitoulin districts on Tuesday, July 16. The health unit will continue to monitor weather conditions, however the humidex is no longer expected to be above 40.
The public is reminded to be cautious as high heat and humidity can cause heat-related illness. The signs and symptoms include rapid breathing, weakness or fainting, more tiredness than usual, headache, and confusion. If you or someone in your care experiences these symptoms, contact a health care professional, friend, or family member for help. In emergencies, call 911.
The humidex is a scale that indicates the level of personal discomfort resulting from a combination of heat and humidity. The Health Unit and the City of Greater Sudbury follow a hot weather response plan that has three levels:
1. Heat Advisory: issued when the humidex reaches or is expected to reach 36 or higher for at least two consecutive days 2. Heat Alert: declared when the humidex reaches or is expected to reach 40 or higher for at least two consecutive days 3.
