Hats off to a real local newspaper

To the Expositor:

I have been recently been re-introduced to your newspaper. I travelled your lovely island weekly through the mid 1980s through mid ‘90s for my job, and always picked up a copy before leaving. I was transferred to Eastern Ontario and your paper was lost to me. Recently, I was given a copy and my interest has been renewed, only I’m back in the north in Elliot Lake and now can pick it up weekly. I still cannot get over how well your staff covers the events on the Island so thoroughly, and actually reporting factual and detailed real news, no matter what the subject. What is so refreshing to me is the fact that your writers are actual journalists, providing balanced facts and, are unafraid of injecting a personal twist or, what I refer to as professional journalistic opinion. In many small newspapers these days, journalistic opinion or (Heaven forbid) “editorializing” is non-existent, and that is a disservice to readers. Large city publications still put forth opinions by dedicated columnists but, small local publications, many swallowed up by large chains and then underfunded and starved, care only for advertising dollars and very little about real news that people want and need to know.

I especially enjoy the writings of Mr. Erskine when he reports on council meetings, being a bit of a political junkie myself, but his very interesting story on the Emperor on June 7 was riveting. I am not aware who penned the editorial in the same issue, but I could not agree more with the premise.

My hat is off to what I feel as a real local newspaper, and look forward to many more years of informative, interesting and factual real journalism. Thank you for renewing my faith in real local media.

Sincerely,

Keith H. Moyer
Elliot Lake
