LITTLE CURRENT—In a strange twist of fate, Little Current’s west end resident Margaret Bowerman and her 15-year-old son Cheyenne lost their home to a fire Sunday evening exactly one month after their daughter and sister, Katrina Haggart and her family, had lost their home to a blaze on the other side of the same community.
Ms. Bowerman told The Expositor that she had left her home for five minutes Sunday evening to get a dryer hose from her daughter’s house and when she returned she saw smoke billowing from what she thought was her neighbours’ home. It was, in fact, coming from her home of almost 15 years.
She said she was relieved to learn Monday that she had content insurance and so will begin the process of finding herself and her son a new place to live.
She learned that the fire is thought to have started in her bedroom, noting that the damages to the house are almost complete.
Cheyenne had been at the home of family friends Pete and Karen Williamson where he was playing video games with their son when the blaze occurred. It is with the Williamson family that the pair is currently staying.
“What are the odds of that happening,” Ms. Bowerman said of the two fires in one month, obviously still in a state of disbelief.
Ontario Fire Marshal James Allen was called in to help with the investigation as to the cause of the fire. Mr. Allen confirmed with The Expositor that the fire began in the southwest back bedroom on the main floor. He noted that there was substantial damage to the home and that it would take “quite a lot of digging” through rubble during his investigation.
