DAWSON TOWNSHIP—Tony Clement, minister for FedNor, has announced a Government of Canada investment of $394,000 toward the Meldrum Bay waterfront development project that will enhance tourism, create jobs and strengthen the economy of the Township of Dawson and the entire Manitoulin region.

“The government is empowering Northern Ontario communities to take charge of their economic future by investing in local priorities that create jobs and promote business development and growth,” said Mr. Clement. “This investment in the Meldrum Bay waterfront development project is helping to revitalize the community, enhance tourism, attract private sector investment to the area and position the Manitoulin region for long-term prosperity.”

The FedNor funding will enable the Dawson Citizens’ Improvement Association (DCIA) to complete the final phase of the Meldrum Bay waterfront development project in the Township of Dawson. Specifically, the funding will be used to upgrade the marina’s docks, enhance fuel and waste disposal services for boaters, and complete infrastructure improvements to the existing wharf.

“Today’s announcement demonstrates that the government of Canada is committed to helping small Northern Ontario communities, such as Meldrum Bay, succeed,” said Wendy Van Every, president of the DCIA. “By investing in this important waterfront project, FedNor is helping to create a long-term economic driver for the Manitoulin region that will enhance local tourism, create and maintain jobs, and strengthen the regional economy.”

The funding announced Tuesday is provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that strengthen community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
