VAUGHAN—One week after your community newspaper picked up three awards on the national level at the Canadian Community Newspapers Association, The Expositor was also honoured by its provincial peers at the Ontario Community Newspapers Association spring convention and Better Newspapers Competition awards held this year in Vaughan on Toronto’s north side.
The Expositor’s award winning website manitoulin.ca has picked up another accolade, being named best in the province by judge Thomas Miller of the Spruce Grove Examiner and Story Plan Reporter in Spruce Grove, Alberta.
“This is a great community newspaper website,” he writes. “The front page is excellent—the first thing you see is the most important local news story. There are only a few widgets to navigate through and overall the website is very easy to use and the advertising works well. For a community paper of this size, the level of interactivity is good with a high volume of Facebook and Twitter posts, as well as interesting videos.”
This newspaper also picked up a third place award in the category of Best Photo Layout for Giovanni Capriotti’s photo essay on a day aboard the Purvis Fisheries Tug The Purvis titled ‘The Shift.’ “Wow, some of Giovanni Capriotti’s photos are like paintings. The composition, light and colour are so rich,” Rich Dal Monte, editor of The Tri-City News in Port Coquitlam, BC writes.
The Expositor was also given an honourable mention in the coveted Best News Story category.
“Dentist. Unprofessional. Wind Turbines,” the judge’s comment begins. “What a weird and bizarre connection of angles to pull together into a story. Very lengthy—hard to chew through—but necessary to bring what must have been a long-covered story to a close. Loved it.”
Earlier this month, The Expositor was awarded a second place for Best Website, a third for Best National Editorial and a third for Best Photo Layout (also for Mr. Capriotti’s ‘The Shift’) in the industry’s national awards competition.
