M’CHIGEENG—The Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) Mustangs golf team will be sending eight golfers to the Northern Ontario championships taking place this week. They had an unusual way of advancing due to the closing down of Rainbow Ridge Golf Course in Manitowaning last Thursday due to the police report of a man from Wiikwemkoong being armed and dangerous in the community.

“Most golfers played 13 holes, with some golfers playing 14 holes,” Jordan Smith, sports coordinator for MSS, told The Expositor. “At that point in the day everyone was ordered to get into the clubhouse because of the police alert.” He noted it was not too long after that the other participating schools had to leave.

“We ended up having to go with what we had played,” said Mr. Smith. After discussing options to make it fair for all players, with all the coaches of the other teams, “we ended up having to go with what we have in terms of number of holes played and with an average score per holes.”

The MSS Mustangs team won the boys team division. Mr. Smith pointed out Noah Thorpe was leading through 14 holes with a score of 66 and Rylan Carrick through 13 holes had carded a score of 63. Both were very, very close. They both shot really well.”

Other members of the Mustangs boys’ team who played on the Mustangs North Shore Secondary School Athletic Association championship team included Hudson Hare, Corbin Best and John Mende.

“We had three of our girls’ team members who finished in the top four in scoring at the tournament,” said Mr. Smith. “They include Amy Smith, Saraya Eshkawkogan, and Eva Corbiere. Saraya, who had placed third in the pre-NSSAA tournament, was on track to shoot a similar score at NSSAA.”

“All our girls finished within the top eight from among the total of 12 players, said Mr. Smith. ”In total, we are sending eight golfers from MSS to the Northern Ontario championships to be played this week.”
