Driver, passengers okay after bus ditched

TEHKUMMAH—Icy conditions and high winds last Friday caused an Ontario Northland bus to skid off the road and land on its side in a Tehkummah ditch Friday morning with two passengers on board.

Ontario Northland reported that neither the passengers nor the driver sustained injuries in the accident that took place just before 9 am.

“At around 9 am Friday morning, the bus was blown off the road and into the ditch (on the 10th Concession in Tehkummah),” Ontario Northland media spokesperson Renee Baker told The Expositor.

A taxi was called which brought the passengers to Espanola where they then caught an Ontario Northland bus to Sudbury, Ms. Baker added. Bus service was cancelled on Manitoulin for the remainder of that day, but resumed as usual on Monday morning.

A photo of the overturned bus was sent to The Expositor Office Friday morning and shared to its Facebook page (facebook.com/ManitoulinExpositor) where it garnered a lot of views. The photo reached 100,917 people, saw 21,797 engagements (likes, shares or comments) and was shared directly from The Expositor’s Facebook page (which has the largest following on Manitoulin Island) 1,270 times.
