ST. JOHN’S—Dr. Maurianne Reade is now a recipient of the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada’s Fellowship Award, a prestigious recognition of her dedication and contribution to the practice of medicine in rural communities.
“I was honoured,” said Dr. Reade on receiving the recognition. “I appreciate that the society recognizes the duration of being in medicine and the contribution.”
Longevity in the practice of rural medicine is a prime requisite for the fellowship, and is itself a remarkable accomplishment in these days of fewer general practitioners, never mind those choosing to ply their skills in a rural setting.
“I have been practicing longer than most of the medical students (at the Northern Medical School of which she is a part) have been alive,” she laughed.
“Rural doctors practice a distinct form of medicine that has many challenges and requires a varied skill set and an ability to work under sometimes difficult circumstances,” noted Dr. John Soles, Nominations and Awards Committee Chair with the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada in his letter informing Dr. Reade of her nomination for the award. “The Society of Rural Physicians of Canada (SRPC) believes that this dedication to the profession and the acquired expertise should be recognized. To this end, the SRPC has created the Fellowship in Rural and Remote Medicine (FRRMS). On behalf of the Society of Rural Physicians, I wish to congratulate you on meeting all of the criteria.”
Those criteria include that the physician must have worked in rural and remote Canada for 10 years. The physician must have been a member of the SRPC for at least five years; the physician must have received the Rural Service Award in a previous year; and that the physician must be present at a sponsored event where the certificate is being presented.
The Fellowship certificates were presented in conjunction with the SRPC’s 26th Annual Rural and Remote Medicine Course, held at the St. John’s Convention Center in St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador. The ceremony took place on the evening of Friday, April 13.
