SHEGUIANDAH—A portion of Highway 6 near Ge Te Miikan Road in Sheguiandah First Nation was causing considerable concern to residents over the weekend when it appeared that the road was caving in over a wooden culvert.
A dip had appeared in the road, with a hole and crack developing. Residents note that the issue has been ongoing for some time but alleged that despite complaints and concerns being expressed there was no action being taken by the Ministry of Transportation’s (MTO) contractor DBI.
The roadway was patched over the course of the weekend and the MTO has issued assurances that the roadway remains safe to travel.
“At the location of culvert on Highway 6 that you asked about, there has been some settlement of the roadway above the culvert,” said Lara Cantin, MTO regional issues and media advisor. “The culvert is scheduled for replacement in 2018. Our maintenance contractor is continually monitoring the site to ensure it remains safe for travel.”
