The above zero temperatures and lovely sunshine have put everyone in a good mood. The Canada geese and sandhill cranes have warbled and honked their way back home. I love to hear them as they fly overhead, heading to the fields or the lake. The snow on my flowerbed is still about three feet deep so it will be a while before the daffodils show their pretty yellow heads.
The Providence Bay Curling Club Pancake Breakfast was very well attended on the first Thursday of the month. The great spring weather brought our good neighbours out to enjoy the delicious breakfast and wonderful camaraderie. This delicious breakfast is served at the Providence Bay Curling Club the first Thursday of every month with proceeds to the curling club.
It sure is great to see the lakes and rivers opening up to spring. The slow melt has really been beneficial in allowing a gradual run-off and not flooding. This writer is eager for the opening of the trout season at the end of the month. I’m sure the rainbow are stacking up, ready to enter the rivers for spawning. A sure sign of spring is seeing adults and children on their bicycles through town and walking without having to bundle up!
Lots of maple sap is being boiled down to that amazing maple syrup. That dark golden delight smothered my waffles at this morning’s breakfast. I have discovered the pleasure of having a little dash of maple syrup in my coffee.
The Coffee Shop at the Providence Bay Curling Club is always busy Monday to Friday from 7 until 9:30 am. Everyone is welcome to drop in for a good cup of coffee and a couple of pieces of toast with your favourite jam or peanut butter. Proceeds from the coffee shop go to help with the curling club. There is always a laugh or two and good companionship.
The Municipality of Central Manitoulin had a lovely reception at the Mindemoya Community Centre for the volunteers. After words from Mayor Gerry Strong and CAO Ruth Frawley everyone enjoyed tasty homemade cookies and chocolate and vanilla cakes, decorated for the occasion. All in attendance were awarded with municipality volunteer pins.
The Lions Club had their convention in Sudbury at the Radisson Hotel. Many members of the Island clubs attended this weekend event to celebrate volunteerism and learn how to provide more for the community.
We’ll be seeing our summer residents soon as the nicer weather brings them North to open their cottages. The Chi-Cheemaun will be running in just a few weeks as long as the ice is out of Georgian Bay. We hope all the tourist operators have a very successful season.
Our condolences are extended to the family of Sadie Debassige. Our sincere thoughts and prayers go to Eldridge and their families in this loss. Sadie was fun loving and always eager to assist in the community. She will truly be missed. Our sincere sympathy and best wishes are offered to Vicki Kennedy and her family in the passing of Doug. This writer will miss his quick wit as I shopped at Foodland. Sincere condolences are sent to the family of Sue Gibson. Sue was a hard worker, eager to help out where she could. She was a very proud grandmother, always bragging about her family. Sue will be missed in the community.
Get well wishes are extended to Erma McAllister. This fine lady is not feeling well and has been in Mindemoya hospital. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. Be mindful of our friends and neighbours who are in the hospital or healing at home. I’m sure a quick phone call will raise their spirits.
