LITTLE CURRENT—Canada’s Olympic team has got it right with their Twitter hashtag #wearewinter, celebrating our love of winter and the white stuff, as does the Little Current Lions Club with its annual Winterfest Weekend, which begins this Friday, January 31 through February 2.
The Manitoulin Expositor is again urging Little Current and area residents to get creative with the plentiful amount of snow in their yards and enter their icy imaginations by this Friday at 5 pm for judging by phoning The Expositor Office at 705-368-2744 or emailing expositor@manitoulin.ca. Judging will take place on Sunday afternoon and prizes will be awarded! Don’t forget to include your address.
What better way to start off a Winterfest weekend than with a delicious plate of turkey tetrazzini at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church Groundhog Day luncheon. The cost is just $10 per person and includes turkey tetrazzini, salad, dessert, and coffee or tea. Takeouts are available by phoning Debbie at 705-368-3162.
An entire weekend of great hockey and Manitoulin’s finest athletes will be on display all weekend long beginning at 6 pm on Friday night. This year’s divisions include sportsmen, women and oldtimers, so purchase a weekend pass for only $10 and cheer them on.
Gore Bay’s claim to fame, curfling (a curling/shuffleboard cross), is being held on Friday night at the Little Current Curling Club starting at 7 pm. Newcomers are welcomed and encouraged and for only $5, a great time is promised! To pre-register contact John Hodder at 705-368-2774.
Starting at 8 pm, Karaoke Konnie rocks the rec centre hall and songsters are prompted to start warming their vocal chords up now before they hit the stage. Add your voice to the party for awesome prizes.
The hall in the rec centre will be open all weekend long with the Lions Club beer garden and a canteen with delicious treats in support of minor hockey, including Anishinaabe tacos!
The Nolan Sisson Park outdoor ice surface at Low Island Park is open and ready for skaters, so bundle up and pop by for a skate all weekend long, “just for fun!”
On Saturday the day will begin with a breakfast of champions—pancakes and sausage—in support of minor hockey from 8 am until 11 am upstairs at the recreation centre. Bring a hearty appetite!
The Northeast Town is again hosting a family fun scavenger hunt from 10 am until 1 pm. Clue sheets can be picked up at the rec centre on the day of the event with prizes to be won.
With all this snow, the Lions Club has reinstated the snowmobile (or drive) poker run! Snowmobilers have between 10 am until 5 pm on Saturday to make it to all five stops on the circuit—Highway 6 Service Centre, Green Acres Restaurant in Sheguiandah, Wilson’s Corner Store in Mindemoya, West Bay General Store in M’Chigeeng and the Northeast Town rec centre hall—before heading to the rec centre hall for the judging of the best hands of cards accumulated and the awarding of prizes. Following the snowmobile poker run, a fun poker tournament will be held in the rec centre hall at 6 pm hosted by Lion Dave Draper for only $5. Call Lion Dave at 705-368-3156 to register or for more info.
Karaoke Konnie will hit the stage once again on Saturday night for the free Winterfest dance (age of majority only). Those wishing to attend must be of age and bring their photo identification.
Sunday, February 2 will be an action-packed day full of championship hockey.
Lion Noreen will be back in the Lions Den at 1:30 pm for a cribbage tournament. The entry fee for this event is just $5.
