GORE BAY—The Carry On Hope-Human Papillomavirus (HPV) campaign committee held a successful fundraising dance at the Gore Bay Community Hall. The evening included music being provided by local band Double Barrel and several door prizes were given out.

“Hi everybody! Could I have a minute of your time?” asked committee member Valinda Fogal of those in attendance at the dance. She introduced members of the committee and said, “on behalf of all of us, thank you for coming out here tonight.”

“Theresa (Rideout) has been gone from our presence for four and-a-half months,” said Ms. Fogal. “She was our inspiration to carry on with our everyday lives. Theresa fought a long battle with HPV, vulvar cancer, her death certificate says vulvar cancer, so we have to make some slight changes in our fundraising campaign. Medical records show no proof of HPV, which is very difficult to diagnose.”

“Research is still being investigated in Theresa’s medical records to find out which doctor mentioned HPV and why it was not thoroughly investigated,” continued Ms. Fogal. “So with support from our dear Dr. Wilson, Theresa’s primary caregiver, our committee is investigating to help raise funds towards two hospice beds on Manitoulin Island—which hopefully will be located in our two area hospitals.”

“Many of you are now aware of Theresa’s refusal to go to the Sudbury Hospice for pain management because she would be away from her family and friends,” continued Ms. Fogal. “Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to stay on the Island in a comfy homey room where family could be by your side versus a hospital room in a strange city.”

On behalf of the committee Ms. Fogal said, “thank you for all the generous donations, the volunteers who came forward to help make this event run smoothly. Thank you to those who travelled so far to attend. Most important thank you Barry (Rideout) for use of your home to hold meetings and work on our fundraising events.” Upcoming events include a July 1 pancake breakfast and a Redneck Horseshoe Tournament during Harbour Days.”

“Again, thank you. As Theresa would say, carry on,” added Ms. Fogal.
