MANITOULIN—In its attempts to make operations at its postal outlets across Canada more efficient, the Canada Post (CP) Corporation is making further service cuts at postal outlets on Manitoulin Island.
“With letter mail volumes dropping all over we have been reviewing our network country-wide to look at ways to make our operations more efficient,” said Canada Post spokesperson Eugene Knapik on Monday. “Our goal is to provide service when customers are using our post offices the most.”
Mr. Knapik explained, “there are a number of communities in our review where it has been determined that not many customers use the services on Saturdays and we have had to make smart business decisions concerning services in these offices. Three communities on Manitoulin will see new hours in effect during the week, effective March 23. Saturday closures will start on March 29 and include Kagawong, Providence Bay and Tehkummah.
For Tehkummah post office, as of March 23 the post office will be open Mondays from 9 am until 12:30 pm and from 2:30 to 6:30 pm. Tuesday to Friday the post office will be open from 9 am to 12:30 pm and from 2:30 pm to 4 pm.
In Kagawong, as of March 23 the post office will be open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays from 10 am to 3:30 pm and on Wednesdays from 10 am to 3 pm.
In Providence Bay the post office will be open from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and from 2 to 6 pm. On Tuesday to Friday the office will be open from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and from 2 until 3:30 pm.
“At all three of those offices adjustment of the hours they are open during the week have been made,” said Mr. Knapik. “There are extended hours of operation for at least one day during the week.”
“There are also other communities that we are intending to do the same and we will be meeting with our bargaining agent this week to get feedback from them,” said Mr. Knapik. “Once the consultations have been carried out, we will be announcing changes for two communities on the Island, South Baymouth and Sheguiandah.”
