SOCHI, RUSSIA – Canada’s Opening Ceremony flag bearer at the Sochi 2014 Games and six-time Olympian, Hayley Wickenheiser, has won a spot on the International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s Athletes’ Commission.
Four new athletes are elected at each Summer Games and two at the Winter Games, replacing those athletes who were elected eight years prior.
“On behalf of the entire Canadian Olympic Family, I want to congratulate Hayley on her admission to the IOC’s Athletes’ Commission,” said Marcel Aubut, President, Canadian Olympic Committee. “It is critical to sport in Canada that our voice is heard internationally, and Hayley will be a tremendous representative for our country.”
Three-time Olympian and two-time Olympic medallist in cross-country skiing, Beckie Scott, who was elected to the same 12-athlete Board, has ended her eight-year term.
“Beckie has been a wonderful ambassador for Canada throughout her career and in the last eight years while at the IOC. I look forward to continuing to work with her and hope she will continue to serve our sporting system,” added Aubut.
This year’s voting took place in the Sochi 2014 Athletes’ Village and the results were made public at an IOC press conference today, held at the Main Press Centre in the Sochi 2014 Olympic Park. Ole Einar Bjørndalen from Norway (biathlon) was the other Winter Olympic athlete elected.
