SUDBURY – On May 6 Cambrian College welcomes a group of students from Wasse Abin Wikwemikong High School for the Let’s Talk Science first annual Aboriginal science fair. Between 15 and 20 students, participants in the Aboriginal mentor program, will present their science projects to faculty and staff of Cambrian College, as well as their loved ones and members of the public.
“This is an important event for high school students from the region, as it creates awareness on campus of their achievements and celebrates the perspectives they bring as young Aboriginal people doing scientific work,” Richard Ouellet, Director of the Wabnode Centre for Aboriginal Services, says.
The high-schoolers have been mentored by students from Laurentian University since last November.
“This kind of event is special to us because we will have the opportunity to meet our future postsecondary students and welcome them to our campus,” Ouellet continues. “It is through events like this that we build and strengthen our Aboriginal community on campus and form the relationships that make the Wabnode Centre a home-away-from-home for Aboriginal learners.”
The science fair is presented in partnership with Laurentian University. It is an important step in building bridges and nurturing an interest in postsecondary education in the fields of math, technology, engineering and the life sciences. Students will be judged on the following: best use of research; best oral presentation; best visual display and interaction; young scientist; and most creative project.
The day’s highlights include the following:
- 11 a.m. Science fair (90 minutes for display)
- 1 p.m. Smudge and dream catchers
- 2:30 p.m. The science of physical fitness
- 3:15 p.m. The science of circuitry
- 3:45 p.m. Closing ceremony and science awards
