C.C. McLean wins schools Track and Field Championship

Champs! Charles C. McLean has won the 2017 Manitoulin Island Elementary School Track and Field Championships. The team also claimed the per capita trophy at the competition held last week.

GORE BAY—Charles C. McLean Public School is the 2017 Manitoulin Island Elementary School track and field champion. The C.C. McLean team also won the per capita trophy during the championships, which saw a total of no less than 12 Island records broken.

Overall C.C. McLean led the way with a total of 195.50 points to take first place. Placing second was Little Current Public School (LCPS) with 146.50 points with Central Manitoulin Public School (CMPS) third with 136 points. Wasse-Abin was fourth with 77.50 points, with Lakeview School and Assiginack Public School (APS) in fifth and sixth with 60.50 and 43 points respectively.

C.C. McLean also won the Per Capita Trophy, which is based on the number of points per student eligible (Grades 1 to 8). C.C. McLean had a ratio of 1.55 points per student to take top spot followed by CMPS 0.71 points per student and LCPS at 0.49.

There was a two-way tie for first place in the individual standings for the nine and under female division with Mya Balfe of CMPS and Alex Wilson-Zegil of C.C. McLean with nine points. Sadie Bridgeman of CMPS was second with eight, while there was a two-way tie for third with Tessa Merrylees of C.C. McLean and Zaagaasge Corbiere-Toulouse of Lakeview with seven points each.

In the boys nine and under division, Rhyis Arthurs of LCPS was first with 10, Jack Carter of LCPS in second with eight, and Noah Thorpe of CMPS and Cody Campbell of C.C. McLean third with seven points.

The 10-year-old girls’ division saw Ava Assinewai of CMPS in first with a perfect score of 12 points, followed by Brooke Gibeault of APS second with nine and Annie Balfe of CMPS third with eight. On the boys side Malachi Joseph of C.C. McLean was first with 10 points, Davin Deschenes of LCPS second with nine points.  Jaydan Hayden of C.C. McLean. and John Michael Taggart of LCPS tied for third with eight.

In the girls age 11-year- old division, Aysia Debassige of LCPS and Delaney Bridgeman of CMPS tied for first with 12 points. In second was Shaolin Roy of Wasse-Abin with 7.5 points, while Amelia Osawanimiki of Wasse-Abin and Jazmin Colwell of C.C. McLean tied for third with four points each.

Leading the way in the boys age 11 division was Bay Migwans of C.C. McLean, first with 11 points, Mason Leighton of C.C. McLean in second with 10. There was a two-way tie for third place with Allan Wilkin and Billy Biedermann, both of LCPS, with six points each.

Sophie Hietkamp of C.C. McLean had a perfect score of 12 points to take first place in the girls 12-year-old division. She was followed  by Teah Migwans of C.C. McLean second with seven points. Victoria Trudeau of Wasse-Abin and Autumn Deschenes of LCPS tied for third with six.

There was a three-way tie for first place in the boys 12 year-old division. Trent Bell of C.C. McLean, Liam Bridgeman of CMPS and Lattrell Peltier of Wasse-Abin  tied with 10 points each. Second was Julian Wemigwans of Wasse-Abin and Jacob Wilson of CMPS with eight points each while Darwin Wood of LCPS and Carter Moggy of CMPS finished tied for third with three points.

Record breakers! The C.C. McLean 13+ girls relay team, which included Macy Pearson, Bailey Yaschuk-Middaugh, Malia Leighton and Ayriell Nodecker not only won their relay race at the Manitoulin Island elementary school track and field championships they shattered the Island record as well. The new record they posted is 1:01.95.

Malia Leighton of C.C. McLean posted a perfect score of 12 points to take first place in the girls 13 and over division. In second place was Ayriell Nodecker of C.C. McLean with 10 points. Hailey Prior of CMPS and Francesca Pheasant of Wasse-Abin tied for third with eight points each.

On the boys side Owen Duncanson of CMPS had a perfect score of 12 to take first place, with Nyron Panamick of Lakeview second with 11 points, and Rory Dearing of C.C. McLean third with nine.

The Island track and field records that were broken included: the age nine girls high jump, with Alexandra  Wilson-Zegil setting the record at 1.24 metres; 10 girls 1,500 metre run, Ava Assinewai with 5:5.47, who also set the high jump record at 1.27 metres; 10 boys long jump, Malachi Joseph with a jump of 3.81 metres; 10 boys’ high jump, Eli Lock with a mark of 1.28 metres; 10 boys’ standing long jump Jaydan Hayden  2.09 metres; 11 girl’s standing long jump Delaney Bridgman with a mark of 2.22 metres; 11 girls’ triple jump Delaney Bridgeman with a mark of 8.65 metres; 12 girls, in which Sophie Hietkamp set three records, 4.23 metres in the long jump, 2.23 metres in the standing long jump and 1.37 metres in the high jump. As well, the C.C. McLean 13+ girls team of Macy Pearson, Bailey Yaschuk-Middaugh, Malia Leighton and Ayriell Nodecker set a new record of 1:01.95.
