PEACE ON EARTH––Staff and students at Charles C. McLean all wore red clothing as the school took part in the national Red Friday celebrations on December 11. The school was showing support for all Canadian Forces world-wide.

GORE BAY—Over the years it has become a tradition that has a lot of meaning for students and staff of Charles C. McLean Public School, remembering all those Canadian Forces troops who will not be home for Christmas as they are serving in other parts of the world to protect our country.

Students and staff at C.C. McLean were all decked out in red clothing last Friday as part of the national Red Friday celebrations. “This is done in support of all our Canadian troops,” stated Heather Jefkins, Grade 4/5 teacher at C.C. McLean. Students held up placards bearing the words for this years’s theme: peace, safety and goodwill.

“We support our troops on a year round basis and I became involved in a small way, when we started this Red Friday program in 2006 when our Canadian forces were in Afghanistan,” said Ms. Jefkins.

“With all the things going on in the world, Canadian Forces peacekeeping in the Kuwait Mission and in other areas, it is always our wish for peace on earth so that they can be home here in Canada with their families as well,” said Ms. Jefkins. “Our school and local community are very supportive of our programs supporting the troops.”

Ms. Jefkins also explained, “we’re partnered with 21 different Canadian Forces members across Canada and also 12 serving members in South Sudan that we support as well.”

“And our school staff are tremendously supportive of all our initiatives,” said Ms. Jefkins.
