Blue Jay Creek culvert renewal means Hwy 542 bypass in place for seven months

TEHKUMMAH—Motorists in the Tehkummah area will be forced to take a detour for the next seven months as three culverts along Highway 542 will be replaced beginning next Monday.

“The project includes the replacement of three structural plate corrugated steel centreline culverts over Blue Jay Creek on Highway 542,” explained Ministry of Transportation regional issues and media advisor, northeastern region, Gordan Rennie. “The culverts will be replaced with open footing pre-cast concrete box culverts.”

In order to replace the culverts, Highway 542 will be closed at the creek,” Mr. Rennie added.

Westbound traffic (to Mindemoya) will be detoured onto Highway 6, then on to Sideroad 10, then to Townline Road and Highway 542A. “The culvert replacement staging (or sequence) is designed so access to individual properties and commercial businesses, such as the Garden’s Gate Restaurant, will always be provided,” Mr. Rennie stressed.

It is anticipated that work will commence on March 12 and that the Highway 542 closure and detours will be in place until early fall. The exact timing of the closure/re-opening is dependent of the contractor’s progress of work, weather, etc.

Belanger Construction was awarded this tender at a cost of approximately $2.8 million.

The first of three detour routes planned for the culvert replacements on Highway 542.
