Nora Bath-Haring Having come to the Island for the past 30 years and weekends since 2003, making Kagawong her full time home in 2010 was an easy decision for Nora Bath-Haring. “Boating with my in-laws” is what brought Ms. Bath-Haring to the area. Her husband Klaus Haring is the owner of Journal Printing in Sudbury. His parents Bert and Magda Haring were well known in Kagawong and White Pine Walk was created in their honour. Ms. Bath-Haring attends most council meetings and when asked if there was anything she would like to see changed she responded simply that council could be “more efficient.” A teacher by profession, Ms. Bath-Haring shared, “if I say I’m going to do something, I do it.” Her most proud characteristic is that she is punctual. This farmer’s daughter enjoys physical labour and is active in her community. Ms. Bath-Haring is the organist at three Island churches, enjoys drumming, and volunteering at the nursing home in Gore Bay. As a member of the Waste Management Committee, Ms. Bath-Haring stated, “farmer’s daughters are always interested in the environment.” The group has initiated many improvements at the landfill site. Representing St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, Ms. Bath-Haring sits on the Park Centre Advisory Committee, which is made up of members from several different groups in the township. Some of the features Ms. Bath-Haring feels attract and keep people in the area is the centrally located, quiet, pretty countryside. It is also close to the Benjamin Islands, which is a major destination for boaters in the North Channel. “Improved recreational facilities for all ages and perhaps a movie night” are two draws she feels would attract people to and in the community. Ms. Bath-Haring said she has no clear-cut agenda in mind. She supports an option on the township website to pay taxes online or at the very least pay in person at the office through use of a POS hand held device. An online option for automatic withdrawal would also be appealing. Ms. Bath-Haring said that when funding through grants become available, she supports the waterfront development project. Maintenance of the road system within the community has been on her mind during the past year and she feels some improvements could be made and is curious as to whether the township is under obligation to keep them maintained within provincial standards. “Things cost money,” stated Ms. Bath-Haring. “It costs money for services and we all have to pay taxes.” Ms. Bath-Haring will be participating in the all candidates’ night to be held at the Kagawong Park Centre on Monday, October 6 at 7 pm.
