MANITOWANING—Pies in the face, pink hair, extra recess and dog kissing. On September 24, the students of Assiginack Public School were rewarded for raising over $500 at their annual Terry Fox run.

The original fundraising goal for the event was for the students to try to earn $500, but at the final count they had earned a grand total of $2,064. The Student’s Council group had decided on a variety of fun events to hold if the students met specific fundraising benchmarks. The reward for $200 dollars was that the students would get extra recess, $300 meant that two teachers would get pies to the face, and for $400 dollars the principal of Assiginack, Margaret Stringer, would kiss a dog. For the $500 dollar mark three teachers would dye their hair pink.

Principal Stringer was very surprised that the small school managed to raise over $2,000. “I was astonished because the population of our school is only 130 students and with such a small school we raised over 2,000 dollars in half a week. That shows that you can do what ever you put your mind to.”

“It was really cool doing the Terry Fox run!” exclaimed Hailey Van Den Heuvel, when she and her brother C.J. finished throwing pies in the faces of teachers Ms. Ferguson and Ms. Pennie. The siblings earned the honour by raising the highest amounts out of all Assiginack students.

This year’s Terry Fox run was a huge success as both a fun event for students and staff, and as a fundraiser for cancer research. Money was raised, pies were thrown, dogs were kissed, and hair was dyed. The students of Assiginack Public School are looking forward to having another Terry Fox event next year.
