MANITOWANING—The bustling Assiginack Public Library can now boast even more space for its many patrons with its renovations almost complete at the former municipal office in Manitowaning.

While the library has, for many years, shared the space on Spragge Street, with the municipal office now moved to its new Arthur Street location, it has spread out to encompass the entire building.

“In 31.5 years, this is the first time I’ve had a view,” librarian Debbie Robinson said, noting the view towards Manitowaning Bay. The large picture window has a counter with two computers and spaces to plug in electronic devices, all while taking in the picturesque harbour beyond.

The library’s original space is now even roomier with places to sit and enjoy a good book or magazine and a dedicated space to showcase some award-winning authors can now be found along the wall where Ms. Robinson’s desk once sat. The entire space is dedicated to adult reading, both fiction and non-fiction, with DVDs and magazines available too.

There are also dedicated reading rooms for both teens/young adults and children.

The library also offers free wireless Internet through the entire building, right through to the outdoor patio where users are also encouraged to go with a good book.

The former council chambers is now a ‘meeting room’ that can be booked through the library for local groups and organizations to use.

“The role of the library is changing,” Ms. Robinson said, noting that the change to Assiginack Public library is reflective of the way people now use their libraries.

While the number of titles in the library has not changed, the space has, allowing patrons more room and flexibility with how they use the space.

The library is open Tuesdays from 10 am to 4:30 pm and 7 to 8 pm, Thursdays from 10 am to 4:30 pm and 7 to 8 pm and Saturdays from 11 am to 3:30 pm.

The original library now boasts more room for adult titles. The library also includes a dedicated children’s room and teen/young adult room.
