Scott Russell’s book, ‘Open House: Canada and the Magic of Curling’ celebrates the other ice game that is important to Canadians. Men and women of all ages take part in this much loved game. There are over a million curlers in Canada—it sweeps the nation (pun intended). This book documents the traditions, heroes and legends of the ‘broom and stone’ sport. It captures precisely the spirit of this wonderful national pastime.

‘Cornered: Hijinks, Highlights, Late Nights and Insights’ by Hockey Night in Canada’s Ron MacLean and co-authored by Kirstie McLellan Day is filled with exclusive details and anecdotes of his life in sports broadcasting, in particular the hockey world. The book is packed with stories from his early career days and right up to his present stint on ‘Coach’s Corner.’ Some of the tales are hilarious, others are perceptive and nostalgic. MacLean has rubbed shoulders with the greats of hockey since the early eighties. He has an acute intelligence and a charming personality (and those traits helps make Don Cherry’s rants bearable).

Dina Nayeri was born in Tehran during the revolution. She immigrated to the United States as a young child. Her book, ‘A Teaspoon of Earth and Salt’ is the story of 11-year-old Saba and her twin sister Mahtab. It relates a tale that extols the virtues and significance of mastering one’s own destiny and karma. It is nice to have a new literary voice—Nayeri is a good storyteller!

Historical novelist Bernard Cornwell is an awesome writer and he excels at the details. Cornwell’s book, ‘The Lords of the North,’ is set in the year 878 and follows the adventures of Uhtred, a demoted, dispossessed English Lord. The novel is based on real events—the book is exciting, authentic and dynamic!

Young Adult Pick: ‘Chasing Yesterday: Betrayal’ and ‘Chasing Yesterday: Truth’ by author Robin Wasserman.

DVD Pick: ‘Labyrinth’ starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly—a movie full of magic, imagination, fantasy and fun—a cast of amazing characters designed by director/creator Jim Henson (of Muppet fame)!
