David Suzuki’s book ‘David Suzuki: The Autobiography’ revisits and picks up where his book ‘Metamorphosis’ left off and continues to the present. Suzuki is an icon in the Canadian as well as the world’s scientific community–a renowned environmentalist. In this new book he talks about his early career, the creation of the Suzuki Foundation, about his hopes for the future and about growing old. This is a portrait of a remarkable man–an intimate look at a true man of vision.

Jacques Cousteau is another larger than life individual–the intrepid French oceanographer who introduced most of the last three generations to the wonders of the underwater world. Cousteau was a filmmaker, adventurer, conservationist, scientist, inventor, explorer, businessman, and highly skilled diver–a pretty impressive resume! Viewers were always mesmerized by his marine documentaries and his awesome concern for the creatures and plant life of the sea was obvious to all. Author Brian Matsen’s book, ‘Jacques Cousteau: The Sea King’ is a wonderful biography that delves into all aspects of this vibrant man’s life. Every time someone takes a breath when using a scuba tank they should say a profound thank you to that equipment’s creator–Cousteau. It gives all of us an opportunity to see the beauty of the deeps!

Two sisters, not on speaking terms for years–one a millionaire’s showy wife, the other a struggling, in debt single mom. The one thing that they have in common is the numbing pain of their sister’s disappearance some twenty years ago–and now that is a wound that is being reopened. ‘Pretty Girls’ by Karin Slaughter is a thriller that will have you racing through the pages to get to the answers!

Robert Galbraith (aka J.K. Rowling of ‘Harry Potter’ fame) has published her first crime novel. ‘The Cuckoo’s Calling’ introduces readers to Cormoran Strike, an Afghanistan veteran who lost a leg to a land mine. Strike’s private detective agency is not doing so well, debts are piling up and a break up with his long time flame has him sleeping on his office couch. That’s when a man comes through the door with an incredible story—and the adventure is on. This new, if somewhat battered hero is a welcome addition to the crime fiction hero fold!

Young Adult Reads: ‘Beastly’ by Alex Flinn.

DVD Pick: ‘The Book of Negroes’ starring Aunjanue Ellis, Lyriq Bent, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Louis Gossett Jr.—a brilliant mini series based on the bestselling novel by Canadian author, Lawrence Hill–the story of a strong-willed African woman daring to survive in a world of slavery–really well done!
