SAGAMOK–Police services are requesting that anyone in the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation area who spot any suspicious person to call 911 and report the sighting.
A news release from the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation and issued under the signature of Chief Paul Eshkakogan earlier this morning cautions community members to remain indoors, lock their doors and to draw their blinds, due to an incidence of violence in the community. Biidaaban Kinoomaagegamik and Shiki Waase Aabin Binoojiinh Gamik are on lock-down along with other band operated buildings.
Media reports from the community indicate that at least one person has been shot and police presence in Sagamok and surrounding communities has been reported as heavy.
Sagamok First Nation is under the jurisdiction of the Anishinabek Police Service. OPP spokesperson Constable Don Bissonnette, media relations with the OPP, confirmed that members of the OPP are assisting with an incident in the community, but refrained from confirming that there is a suspect at large or if there had been any victims. Constable Bissonnette indicated that the OPP were readying a press release on the incident.
Police were scouring the community in search of a suspect throughout the day and reports indicate that at least one weapon is being sought.
