Mischievous Person Strikes Again
On June 9, 2016, a 25-year old Espanola resident was back in police custody only days after being charged for a disturbance she caused at the Royal Bank; threats she made to an arresting officer; and mischief she caused at the police station.
On this date, the Espanola Police Service received a call to attend the Cambrian College satellite campus in Espanola, regarding a student who was disrupting a class. Upon arrival, police received information that the student had struck and threatened another student, then left the class room and threw a hot cup of coffee through the open classroom window, landing on a second student. The female was arrested after she returned to the school, and taken to the Espanola Police Service, where she flooded a cell with water from the sink.
As a result of the incident, the female was charged criminally with:
- Assault (2 counts);
- Uttering Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm; and,
- Mischief Under $5000.00.
She appeared in bail court in Sudbury on June 10, 2016, to answer to her charges.
Break & Enter at Domtar
The Espanola Police Service are investigating a break, enter and mischief that occurred at the Domtar administrative building located at 79 Tudhope Street, Espanola, and are asking for the public’s assistance in solving this crime.
The building, also known as the former Espanola Hospital site, was entered on June 8, 2016 between 7:30 p.m. and 11:50 p.m., through a west facing door. Once inside, the culprit(s) caused damage to the interior of the building, by smashing an interior door, damaging cabinets, and discharging a fire extinguisher.
At this time, there are no suspects in this break and enter, and police are asking anyone with information about the person(s) responsible, to call the Espanola Police Service at (705) 869-3251 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
Driving Under Suspension
On June 11, 2016, at 2:00 p.m., an Espanola man was stopped by the Espanola Police during a R.I.D.E. spot-check being conducted on Penage Lake Road, and recognized by the officer as being a suspended driver.
As a result, the 26-year old was charged with driving while under suspension contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. He will appear in Provincial Offences Court on August 11, 2016, to answer to his charges.
Hand-Held Communication Device Charges
On June 8, 2016, the Espanola Police Service conducted enforcement for the use of handheld devices in Espanola, and within a 2 hour period, charged 7 drivers with the offence of Driving with a Hand-Held Communication Device, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.
On June 17, 2016, an eighth person was charged in as many days, after the police service received a call from a concerned motorist that a female traveling behind her for the past hour, had been talking on her cell phone. An Espanola police officer stopped the car, and charged the 30-year old driver with Driving with a Hand-Held Communication Device.
The penalty for Driving with a Hand-Held Communications Device is $490.00, and 3 demerit points.
Theft From Vehicles
The Espanola Police Service are investigating three thefts that occurred from vehicles during the early morning hours of June 9, 2016, in the area of Tudhope Street, and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the culprit(s) responsible or recovering the items stolen.
On the morning of June 9, 2016, police attended at three separate vehicle entries that occurred over night. The culprit(s) involved obtained very little for their efforts, just a few Tim Hortons gift cards with minimal balances; however, in two of the three incidents, the culprit(s) smashed door windows on the vehicles to enter, resulting in the owners having to pay for the repairs.
