Writer seeks information on World War I soldier

To the Expositor:

I am writing to ask if anyone has knowledge of a volunteer named Louis Jacob Norton. His name is inscribed on the Little Current soldier’s monument.

His serial number was 1003458. He enlisted in the Manitoulin-North Shore Battalion 227. He joined the army on June 14, 1916. He died of pneumonia at Camp Borden on August 28, 1916 at the age of 30.

His next of kin was Mary Ann Norton. His funeral may have been conducted by Father Papineau. His notice of obituary is recorder at Gore Bay, September 7, 1916. His name is recorded in The Book of Remembrance, page 142, at the Peace Tower in Ottawa.

I presume he was buried at his home in West Bay (M’Chigeeng).

If anyone has details of his life (e.g. relatives on Manitoulin), I would appreciate it if you would contact me at Bill Mullen, 16 Westwind Circle, Guelph, Ontario N1G 4Z4.

Bill Mullen,

Guelph
