WIKWEMIKONG—A new Halloween tradition started in Wikemikong earlier this month with the first annual Wiky Zombie Walk, which brought out over 180 undead and raised just shy of $100 towards the Fostering Futures Fund.
“My wife Brenda and I attended the Sudbury zombie walk and were inspired to start one here on the Island,” explained Wiky Zombie Walk organizer Dwayne Animikwan. “It was kind of a last minute thing. We just threw up the idea as our Facebook status and asked people to meet at the mini mall in Wikwemikong. We also asked some friends like Josh Peltier from Debajehmujig to come and help out with make up. We expected to maybe get 20 people out, but it ended up being a huge event.”
Mr. Animikwan told The Expositor that over 180 zombies of all ages came out, many with their own make up and costumes and others who worked with Mr. Peltier and other volunteers to achieve the undead look.
“We were overwhelmed by the number of people and the amount of spectators,” added Mr. Peltier. “The street (Wikwemikong Way) was lined with people coming out to see the walk. The police came out and helped because we took up a whole lane. It was really great.”
Mr. Animikwan said that throughout the walk he also sent a few buckets around collecting money for the Fostering Futures Fund and ended up raising close to $100.
“It was a great event and we will definitely be doing it again next year, hopefully raising more money (for the Fostering Futures Fund),” concluded Mr. Animikwan. “It was awesome to see the whole community come together and have fun.”
