Wikwemikong police urge residents to not provide financial information over phone or computer

WIIKWEMKOONG—The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Services (WTPS) is reminding all community members to not provide any type of financial information over the telephone or computer.

“There has been an increase in the number of calls involving fake companies or government institutions demanding financial information over the telephone or computer,” the WTPS states. “These fraudulent calls are increasing and seem to be specifically targeting the elderly in the community.”

The WTPS release explains, “The Canada Revenue Service (CRA) does not make calls to residences at any time for the collection of monies, nor do they have the authority to arrest persons for non-payment of monies or taxes.”

“Families with elderly members are encouraged to monitor and assist with any questions the elderly may have to prevent any monetary loss,” says the WTPS. “Community members are also encouraged to report any type of suspicious phone calls, whereby financial information is requested, to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (formerly known as “Phone Busters”) at 1-888-495-8501) or online at RCMP/Onlinereportingsystem.ca.
