Wiikwemkoong adopts Crime Stoppers

Community asked to play role in curbing crime

WIIKWEMKOONG—A large billboard near the entry to Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory was unveiled by the band this past week that aims to engage the community in the battle against illicit drugs and other crimes that have beset the community in recent years. The sign features the phone number for Crime Stoppers North Eastern Ontario in large numerals.

“I am very happy today to introduce this initiative to you,” said Wiikwemkoong Ogimaa Rachel Manitowabi. “This billboard is just a billboard, until it is given its spirit and given the work it is supposed to do by the people. We also ask the Creator to remind us about our seven teachings, including courage, bravery, truth and wisdom.”

Ogimaa Manitowabi said, “this sign is a reminder to us that this community belongs to us, we want it to be a safe community, a healthy community and a happy community.”

She thanked all of the community members who came out to the unveiling and for their commitment to helping to build safety and wellness in the community and she exhorted them to use the information on the sign to that end.

“We want to encourage everybody, if you have a tip about a crime, or there is drugs, stolen property or crime progress, call Crimestoppers,” said acting Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service chief Jason Spooner in welcoming people to the unveiling of the sign. “It helps us as police in the community to solve crimes and you may be eligible for cash rewards.”

Following the unveiling, that included community members and guests moved to an outdoor dining area set up beside the band office for a feast and to offer birthday wishes to Ogimaa Manitowabi.
